View Full Version : HELLO Supramaniacs !! MY BUILD THREAD! (Boost inside aka I really wanted a Mk3)
Element256

I've been banned of SF and frankly I'm sick of it to begin with (LONG story)
and I'm joining this community now.
I realize this is a MKIII forum BUT I have a surprise.
I'm swapping in a R154 tranny to my auto TT MKIV :aigo:
Since my 2 days of joining the site I've already obtained more "useful" knowledge of the tranny\setup than my 2yrs on SF, so I'm here to stay.
I guess this is the best place to do the buildup\progress thread (if not point me to the right place) so here we go.
Bought the car last winter stock from FL with blown engine. It had been wrecked on the front\passenger fender and had just been sitting at some mechanics shop for the last 2yrs collecting debris\hurricane damage.
Since then I've started revamping it in its entirety starting with a JDM shortblock and new brakes and seats.
Also while the engine was pulled I put on a SP57 single turbo and all the fixings. Spools at 3k and hits max boost\power around 4100rpm and holds there with a slight increase all the way to redline.
Power was at 419whp\397tq @ 0.8bar psi during dyno tune. I've since street tuned it and bumped it up to 1.1bar so should be pushing around 470whp. We'll see what happens @ SILV Dyno day. :)
R154 swap is being done by your boy Aaron @ driftmotion, where I'm also picking up the Custom Action clutch and LWFW as well for amazing prices, so if you need a new one hit that man up !
Also going in for a respray later this month since hurricane Katrina wasn't too kind to the car.
That's about it for now. Here's a few straight off the trailer to current status pics and I'll update further as progress is made on the car.
Off the trailer and into the garage:

Element256
07-19-2007, 11:48 AM
I hope so :)
All I know is I was pricing for the 6spd V160 swap and the tranny alone goes for like $4k if it's in good condition and I'm doing the whole swap with parts\labor etc for less than that on the R154.
I've seen some HIGH HP MKIII's running the stock tranny and figured it'd be more than enough to handle my needs as of now.

On the R154 note has anyone heard of the 1st gear Thrust Washer being a weakpoint ? I read somewhere it was Nylon which I refuse to believe and that replacing it with a better material increases the resiliance of the tranny.

I'm just trying to find a thrust washer itself for sale. Don't want to buy the whole rebuild kit.
Element256
07-19-2007, 09:57 PM
I could probably find someone to fab a new one out of a better material. Wonder if that would be a worthwhile endeavor for everyone. Or there's prolly not even that many R154 people that have the stock washer still.
Justin727
07-19-2007, 11:05 PM
you can pick up 1st gear thrust washer at yota for 30.00 also the the little holding pin for it as well..
The idea of fabbing one up has come up every now and then but no one has jumped on that boat to make one. It would be a good idea to take on!

well, the V160 has proven to hold +1000hp, while the R154 has the thrust washer issues...
plus, it's a 6 speed vs a 5 speed, what you expect LOL

And since when does having a 6th gear help anything ? Most of my 6spd cars I never even used it, unless I was cruising at 100mph but how often do I get open traffic around here ?

not exactly what you'd think
Depending on design, the 6th gear is usually a second overdrive, or used to get closer gear ratios. As a second overdrive, it drops revs and gets beter milage on the highway (or ultimately higher top end, hence the MKIV's 200mph+ ability). As closer ratios you stay in your powerband easier.
The V160 is a rediculously stout tranny to take the abuse I've seen it take. At those levels though, if it DOES break it's driver error (like missing a shift).
OneJoeZee
08-19-2007, 02:10 AM
Uh. The V160 is not double overdrive.
Poodles
08-19-2007, 02:14 AM

We have a local guy who has put a V160 into a Mk3 and we are all speculating that first gear will be absolutely useless due to the high gear ratio's of the tranny and rear end. Does your car have the opposite effect? Do you find it a bit in first? With your mods this probably isn't an issue but maybe with a stock Mk4 it might be more noticeable.
Also, I much prefer the new wheels and wingless. You are now driving my ultimate Mk4. I think the Work Equips are more suited to Mk3's.

Great looking MK4, Black leather interior FTW!!! Toyota F'ed us MK3 owners up all I got was a dark blue interior, black in a mk3 is like finding a hot girl with low self esteem. But I digress.
The only way you could make it better looking would be if you had a CF TRD vented hood. I love that hood on the MK4 the knock offs for other cars look crappy because it only works on a mk4's lines. Nice car though man +10 for you!

1st gear is fine as far as the revs\gearing go but the power that comes on @ 3k just ignites the tires so I quickly go into 2nd anyways. The R154 matches VERY nicely with the Auto TT rear gearing.
TY for the love.

Also I have this hood :

Looks good man. Im actually about to do an R154 conversion on my TT as well. Do you have any pics of the work that they did to extend the shifter? I have a few of the W58 that was extended on clubna-t but haven't see an R154. The shifters look identical but just wanted to see for myself. I just got a Soarer transmission but I'm probably going to end up just using it to get the right measurements to build a custom extension on a USDM R154.

There's a 240sx shop that does these for $250 and IMO the quality of that weld is well worth it.
Here's Aaron's thread.

I would have a tough time parting with that car. The new house needs it in the garage.

Dude. What the hell. That really sucks dude. Can't you take out a loan with the car as collateral?
Element256

I don't like loans and interest rates. Why pay 7-10% more per month for something I already own free and clear ?
Also I need the cash in bank and having a $30k debt payment isn't gonna do anything positive for my construction loan. They're NOT easy to get out here and I'll have to pay taxes on the whole thing upfront as well.
Whoever gets this I'll probably be buying it back in a little over a year if he'll sell it back to me.

see if you can get a friend to do it...
honestly, you'll never be able to build that car again for that much...

For over $40k ? I think I can build it again for that price. lol
Would I want to ? No, but it could be done. I'd rather buy it back cause it's AWESOME !! R154 > V160

gotta remember that a decent TT goes for $25 these days...
and you're not asking $40K... you're losing money on this. Seriously, see if you can find a good friend to sell it to and then buy it back...

Losing $10k on this is better than losing $1mil by not building the house. Seriously it has to go and all my friends drive MKII and MKIII's. No chance in purchasing a $30k car.

Now gimme your wheels
Element256

You can have them for a cool $2k IF I ever decide to sell. Took me a while to find these with Supra front brake offsets that would fit.
If I ever see something else I like as much as these I might change it up. But as of now nobody makes a better looking wheel IMO.

A big transformation but I like it with the wing better. (my.02)

The wing does look amazing from the rear. Front and side angles on the other hand, not so much :(
Plus less people really take notice without the wing, which was one of the main reasons for it.

So you took it off for less attention then? I always liked the OEM wing since it is hidden in the body lines when you are following behind it.

I agree. From behind it's awesome looking. from the side, it's hideous.

I guess it's still for sale for the right buyer, I'm just not going to "actively" pursue getting it sold anymore or pay any $ putting up ads etc...
