I have diagnosed my vehicle with haveing bad valve guides/ seals. the car smokes on start-up, and smokes more heavily depending on how long it has been sitting. I've searched and I think it is the vavle guides/ seals but any other ideas would be welcome. However, I had the head resurfaced less than 5k miles ago when I put on my metal head gasket. It just chaps my ass cause I would like to spend my money elsewhere on my car instead of the head. Not to mention how long it takes to get off. Also worth mentioning, my car doesn't even have 88k original miles. Could i be looking at a blown turbo instead? I'm useing the stock ct-26 and it has been boosting 9-10lbs for probebly over 10k miles now. I know its useing oil because I'm constantly having to put in more. I'm not running a catch can, but when I took off the charge pipes, there wasn't too much oil on the inside. Just a small coating/ skim on the inside. any help is appriciated.

yep sounds just like bad valve seals. most machine shops if they take anything apart they replace the seals. did they? you can replace the seals w/ the head on the block, but it isnt a ton of fun. and if you drop a valve youd have to take it off anyway. if you take your time and pay attention, you can do it without taking much apart.

as said above, it can be done without taking the whole thing apart, but it's a delicate process.

it could also be turbo seals.

thanks for the info guys. im going to be putting on a new turbo pretty soon, so i think this can all be done very delicately. i thought it was the turbo too, but their isn't any oil in the intake track, and the longer it sits, the more smoke it blows out.

, and the longer it sits, the more smoke it blows out.

thats exactly why i believe it to be valve seals. i had the exact problem a few years back and valve seals fixed it.

if your looking for those seals dont go to dealership, dont! rockauto.com has a whole set for 30 some bucks
and dealership charges 8 bucks a piece
its very easy to change, then just get a tool so you could take the valve springs off, its easy! have fun

A lot depends on the shop doing the seals as well.....

If the valves have been tipped and the sharp edge not removed before fitting the new seals it can slice the Lip off the seal and it's useless (might stop bugs climbing down inside but WON'T stop oil)

They're meant to use plastic Condoms over the Valve stem when pushing the new seal down over it but few bother :(

you might need both check the repair manual for the valve guide speck, or you will just end up doing it again. Also if you need to change the guides then the machine shop should do it. They will need to recut the valve seats, to fit the valves properly.

Buy the Toyota ones for $3.47 each from Champion. (90913-02090)

You can do what you like, but I would never invest the sort of labor needed to get those seals replaced and then try to save $30.

By the way, too late for you now, but I had a Toyota set for sale a few weeks ago for $45.
