ANY turbo can be rebuilt - it's a matter of finding the correct parts.

If you are in need a turbo rebuild, contact Jon @ MDC-Motorsports - he has been tracking down all the Garrett parts for some time, now!

Had a question on this, so here goes :)

The standard 'journal' bearing turbos, use a normal bearing with oil holes, to support the rotating shaft on an oil wedge (like your crankshaft does).

The "ball bearing" turbos, use 2 (hence why you will see them called dual ball bearing sometimes) ball bearings (similar to what your idler pulley uses) to let the turbo's shaft rotate. The problem, is you must have an extraordinarily precise ball bearing, to prevent the bearing from being eaten alive @ 100k+ rpm. This is why the ball bearings are so hard to find by themselves!

Can you rebuild a journal bearing center cartridge with ball bearings?

If not, how difficult is it to swap over say my GT40-88 to a ball bearing?

You can go from journal to bearing, but you can't go bearing to journal.

Going from journal to bearing requires extensive machining.
