Why are you avoiding it? It works great if you use it as directed.

Just use the FIPG. That's my tip.

Oh yeah, and these... which took my about 3 seconds to find.

Ya works great! Are you asking if you have to use Toyota FIPG, or generic stuff. I don't know the answer, but others may.

FIPG=form in place gasket.

There is more than one, and many dealers are not very good. I went in to buy it, and got the deer in the headlight stare. And this guy is a good parts guy. It isn't that he didn't know what it was, he has never seen it, his dealer chose not to stock it, instead used generic.

You can use Black RTV just dont over tighten the parts like the oil pan.

What suprahooked said. You can even use a pan gasket. I've never used FIPG on these pans and had a one leak. My own is still dry after 8 years. Those who claim pan gaskets leak don't know how to prep and install them. If you're dead set on using sealant try Permatex Right Stuff. Can be had at any parts store.

would it be better to use the pan gasket + some sealant for extra hold

With what ever you use dont over do it ,What squeezes out also goes in the engine and if you use to much it can become free and clog oil ports. I used rtv only on my oil pan and i let it set up about an hour before i installed it plus you dont what to tighten it to much.

By letting it sit you know you pretty much ruined the effectiveness of it right?

Permatex Ultra Grey, any parts stores will have it.

Gotta go with SH on this. I guess it would depend on how long it sits but even after it's completely set up (which takes longer than an hour) it becomes little different than any elastomer type gasket. It'll still extrude inside the joint. If I can't clean off the excess I let all viscous sealants set up a bit to keep them from extruding outside the joint where they can later break off. That and I use very little. Since the space between the parts after they're tightened is tiny there's no need to go nuts with the stuff.

All the stuff suggested here works fine as long the job is done right. There's no need for special dealer stuff. It's not rocket science, all you're doing is sealing between two surfaces. There's lots of ways to skin that cat. Do you know how the crankcase halves in piston airplane engines are sealed? They run a length of silk thread or synthetic string around them. It's the only approved method because it prevents a loss of preload on the bolts holding the cases together. In a pinch I've used the same technique on cars. Not that I'm suggesting you run a string around your oil pan but in other places as long as the surfaces are clean, flat, and reasonably close tolerance something like fishing line works fine. No other gasket is needed.

^Neat bit of information I will probably never have a practical use for! LOL

Yeah, it's not something you'd do often but nice to know. I roll almost all of my own gaskets these days but in a pinch tacking some line around a clean surface with a few drops of super glue (go inside the bolt holes) and slapping it on usually works fine on everything from oil to coolant. Works perfectly on stuff like the TB and ISC valve. Easy to remove later on too.

There's lots of such tricks. What do you think we did back in the days before the MHG came along? I can tell you how to run high boost all day long on a stock HG using nothing more than a roll of stainless safety wire, a propane torch, super glue, and an electric engraving pen. Never tried it on a Supra but it worked great on other cars. Sometimes I feel youngsters must think performance mods didn't exist before they were born and everyone drove Flintstone cars.

3bond in most parts/tool stores.

I've used just about EVERYTHING available/suggested and the 3bond wins hands down.
