"speed shifting"

some of you who've drove truck will know what I'm talking about. is this hard on the transmission? how hard? btw speed shifting is bringing the rpm's to the top of the band and quickly slamming it into the next gear w/o use of the clutch

you need to understand that most 10 or 15 speed truck tranny's are NOT syncromesh and the low rpm's of a diesel motor allow for larger, stronger, slower turning gears that can be shifted without the clutch... By not using the clutch you can take the weight off the tranny slip it into neutral and bring the engine side of the tranny up to speed by giving it fuel to sync the gears up allowing them to mesh

One of are newer trucks has a syncro 7 speed... you can shift it without the clutch, but its easier to just clutch it like a car....

So when you take a toyota tranny... that is a syncromesh with small helical cut gears spining very quickly you will find that it is very difficult to sync the gears up on your own... It can be done, but i often find that its quicker and less stressful on the tranny just to clutch it quick

Yeah.. just power-shift it with the clutch. Takes a little practice. After a little bit, you'll be able to take the car to the top of it's powerband, push the clutch in, shift and pop the clutch out without taking your foot off the gas OR redlining the hell out of it.
