i've already relocated my throttle cable and coil packs but I am interested in getting some valve covers with some sort of style to them.

arz
04-09-2007, 02:29 PM
Ideal: Yea I will have to get that title edited, I am so used to calling them "Rocker covers" in the old school Nissan world.

I have models for completely CNC'd ones and had been toying with the idea of sheet metal ones too but figured I would ask your guys opinion before I started cutting chips.

If you guys want to chime in and have a photo of something you just love then please shoot me photo.

I have a lot of details that look like a mess in the model but are not shown here. This Kit is very well thought out in functionality and features. I will release these details when I have REAL valve covers in a few weeks. For now these virtual photos will have to do. Rest assured if I can cover all the details of complete bolt-on racing brakes front and rear, I think you will be surprised at all the things this complete kit does.

http://arizonaperformance.com/parts_photos/Valve_covers/7m_rockercover_bottom-00x_resize.jpg

http://arizonaperformance.com/parts_photos/Valve_covers/7m_rockercover_top_00x_resize.jpg

Dont worry I didnt forget the crank case breathers, Also notice the Gasket groove. This design retains the factory Valve cover gasket, but ditches those stupid ugly washers for the fasteners. I realize those were for insulation not sealing, dont worry I have it covered.

I have thought of every possible angle with this product. If your curious please ask.

Heres a few to get you started:

What about the Coilpacks? Covered!!! Wait and see on the real covers.

What about Spark plug valley covers? Same answer!

Oh wait what about the Throttle cable? JUST WAIT!!!

Oh what about the internal valve cover baffles? Done!!!

Fasteners? Included!!!

Price? Im working on that, but it will probably be a tiered deal because of all the different options.

I have spent months and months gathering all the parts and modeling every possible detail and having the head measured in a CMM.

Hope you like it, please let me know what you think.

This is just a suggestion, because I wont be able to afford them for a while.

04-10-2007, 04:56 PM
I guess I need to put my NA valve cover project on hold:biglaugh: I'm also running the tookwik COP mod. I hope one of the option will be -10an breather fittings. I'm tired of blowing seals.

arz
04-10-2007, 05:31 PM
....I hope one of the option will be -10 AN breather fittings. I'm tired of blowing seals.Seriously? If you have the PCV system going to a catch can plumbed to vacuum or the front of the turbo you should be fine. -10 is about .5 inch inside dia which is quite a bit bigger than the factory breathers. Which seals are you blowing? I would suspect you have a blow by issue or you dont have it plumbed to vacuum properly (you could use a check valve if it is after the turbo).

The short answer is: IT WILL have a threaded vent in each cover and be supplied AN ready. It will be your responsability to plumb your PCV but I can supply a tube to fit the bill if necessairy.

Like I said before this kit will have a lot of options, so I will have to break each piece out. Quoting this kit before I have parts in hand will be impossible.

Wooh awesome. Would it be possible to get the ribs on the top like the factory covers as an option? Either way unless there are insanely expensive I'm in.

Poodles
04-10-2007, 11:24 PM
I thought I was the only one that liked the ribs...

The only issue I'm seeing is that the front is squared off when it needs to fit with the timing cover. I know you'll make sure they fit, but there is no way I'm ditching my timing cover...

Will the throttle cable retain cruise control as well? That's the one big issue I have with going to a FFIM...

arz
04-11-2007, 12:08 AM
The timing cover has no interface with the cam covers. Look closely again. You can keep all that same stuff up front with no issues.

All of the throttle cable details havent been worked out yet. I will keep you posted when they are, I will try like hell to keep Criuse Control, I like mine as well.

Upgraded: got any models or photos yet? They wont be too pricey, dont scare everybody away:icon_bigg

I am picking up a spare head to make sure the fitment on the timing cover side is good where it fits over the cam. ^Most definatly agreed.

With a front facing intake manifold, I've got a visualization right now of popping the hood and throwing people off by thinking its a JZ series motor of something or another just from a more *updated* and stylish valve cover.

The way he's talking up this design sounds like one hell of a concept he's pulling off. I cannot wait! :)

I have a lot of details that look like a mess in the model but are not shown here.

Rest assured the baffles are already modeled and the PCV ports are going to be AN style. With all the other extras this kit covers I would be very surprised if you guys mention something I havent thought of.

arz, i hate to ask such a stupid question...but what about us NAs that want to look good?Im not sure how much clearance there is to the top of your N/A throttle body assembly, but I cant imagine its too hard to put a turbo upper intake manifold on your N/A motor. I will never quote exactly when a brand new product will be released, I have been stung so many times, there are just way too many variables. Im shooting for that but you just cant predict what will go wrong or where you will get resistance.

Besides, these are right on top, they will be easy to replace when the time comes.

Sorry, guess looking like a mess and not being shown together at the same time confused my simple machinist mind. Then again if you mean you edited the model to not show the messy details then I think I gotcha. ;)

If I were spending the type of cash invloved in billet valve covers I might like to see some details though, no matter how messy.

I'm sure he'll post appropriate and accurate pictures before he takes any money for product. I'm sure he's just protecting his interest by not divulging all the details and work he's done at this point. It would be silly to expect people to pay for a product they haven't seen.

Thats exactly the case. Its just a matter of unchecking a few boxes and the messy stuff gets supressed. If it was like framing a house and showed the true quality and workmanship I would show it but theres no benifit to confusing people with an un clear model. Its a virtual model, nothing counts but the final product. Im confident you will all be pleased with the results.

There are several shops that make my prototype and production parts, most of my machinists use Haas machines. All are vertical and some have 5th axis. except the Haas CNC lathe, thats obviously horizontal. I have a very close relationship with all of them.

I always jinx myself by saying, but I understand your need for wanting to know.

For price range I am shooting for the $400-$500 price range. If I can get it cheaper I will, but realize I this mod will cover much more than replacing the Cam covers. The complete solution will include lots of items which will all be optional. Below are just a few of the items that this mod will support.

1. Coilpack relocation
2. Valley cover or Coilpack cover
3. Throttle cable relocation
4. PCV attachment of stock or -10 AN bulkhead fittings.
5. AN fittings for an attachment to the throttle body
6. Completely custom Oil Fill Cap
7. Separate designs for FFIM and stock/aftermarket crossover tube.

The Covers with Coilpack Relocation hardware and Cover I anticipate having done in a few weeks. The complete solutions stated above done by mid June.

Remember there are many things out of my control, so dont get all up tight, if the schedule slips. Nobody has paid for anything yet, so I guess I dont have any real risk of pissing anyone off.

Just trying to get it all straight :) I think that price is extremely reasonable. No, each cam cover is machined from one piece of billet aluminum.

I will offer at least 3 different covers.

1. Covering the relocated coilpacks (that I have already created a mounting for in between the cam covers). Looks kinda like a 2JZ cover to suit the FFIM guys best.
2. Covering the valley flat like on the 1JZ motor (for those that want to hide their coilpacks elsewhere, that will be up to you).
3. Cover same as the 1st one with a dip in it to accomidate for those that are not doing a FFIM.

Just wait, you will be blown away by the looks and the options.

Thanks Reign, for the vote of confidence.

cool cool, I do some work on a Haas VF4 vertical mill, nice machines... perhaps in a few years I'll get to do some work for you since I'll be starting a small CNC shop of my own after I get out of the Marines.
I sure hope these covers turn out as nice as I think they will, and hopefully theyre in production by mid summer, cause I'll be wanting to buy a set :)

any ballpark on price or anything yet?

Only because no one else has did it................

Yes, I will make it seal with the Factory Gasket. And will do!!!

Andy,
Looks great! Any word on 'official' options for the valve covers?
Talk to you later,
Jason
Here are just a few options:

1. On the top breathers they will be changable so you can have AN ports of any size or the stock breather.
2. The Side breather will be changeable also, from a stock style port to an AN fitting.
3. Your stock cap will fit.
4. And the coilpacks will be relocated to the valley with my custom mounts.
5. You can buy the optional cover or you can leave them uncovered.

When I say changable I mean it will have an O-ring and YOU can change it any time you want.

Throttle cable stuff is still in the works.

Anodized? Possibly, but once you see how shinney these are and how easy they polish you will probably go that route. They look amazing in person!!!

Breathers will go in the stock location for now, if I get a lot of requests I might do pre-paid orders with custom PCV port locations.

As it is designed right now there will be 4 different options for the PCV exit ports. The pcv vents will come out the top like stock, with an AN-straight thread, with AN O-ring land, it will support a stock size and style fitting (I will make that and offer it optional) and you will be able to use AN-8, AN-10 and AN-12.

Also the side port up by the oil cap will be retrofitable with a stock style fitting and, the ability to make it an AN fitting also.

Umm price please . I am interested I would like to see what they MIGHT look like with the coil pack relocation thanksImagine 3 of those (loafs of bread) next to each other with the middle one about 3/4" higher and no fasteners showing.

On the price I cant even guess, I paid for material which is almost $100 per cover, then I need to pay the CNC guy, but he is extremely efficent and will have to route thru the code to take out "dead air" and obslete paths. This is 100% of the reason I dont take money in advance, thats how I roll.

arz: they changed the valve covers over the years, the most important change I've seen is the threads for the oil cap. Putting a newer style oil cap on an older style cover will have the text on the cap at a weird angle (unlike if it's used on the proper cover it will be facing straight and readable). IIRC it's the same if you use an older style cap on a newer cover...

hard to explain, but I'll see if I can get some pics to show you...

Sorry to disappoint, but this is an extremely time consuming process the first time around, there is a ton of work in these. Once we have the programing all nailed down we can just pop these out, but the first time always takes the longest.

We worked on the groove last night it looks great, we 3D'd the groove over the #1 cam cap, it looks so awesome. More photos and video will follow when I have it.

Here are the pages with the latest photos, and I will add these to the first post for now, so people dont have to surf 15+ pages of chatter.

are you goign to add oil baffles to them liek the stockersYou drill the upset rivets er... (bosses) out of your stock cam covers and you clean them and install them with fasteners in my cam covers. Look very closely where I drilled out the stock cover, it was very easy.

http://arizonaperformance.com/parts_photos/cam_covers/CIMG1745_resize.JPG
Also notice the raised section where I will use a custom port tool to install the AN-10 fitting
http://arizonaperformance.com/parts_photos/cam_covers/CIMG3813_resize.JPG
Heres an image of the new gasket installed, it fits perfect.
http://arizonaperformance.com/parts_photos/cam_covers/CIMG1743_resize.JPG
Here it is on the head, no fasteners installed.
http://arizonaperformance.com/parts_photos/cam_covers/CIMG1737_resize.JPG

All there is left to do is drill and tap for the baffle and the AN-10 port

It will probably be a few weeks before I can get on the other side. I have a few other irons in the fire.

arz
07-26-2007, 03:47 PM
OK, ALL. I finally have an estimate on what its going to take to make JUST the Cam Covers (left and right). I need at least 6 people to participate in these to get the ball rolling. They will include Fasteners and the o-rings that go under the fasteners. They will include threaded holes and the proper fasteners for you to install your baffle from your donor Cam covers. The PCV will be tapped and set up to receive -10 AN PCV ports on top in the stock location. They will be threaded and tapped to accept -16 AN bulkhead connector for Crank case breather up by the oil cap.

If you chose to stick with stock PCV plumbing I will be offering Aluminum parts that replicate the stock size ports that thread into each one of those locations (you can mix and match any combination -6 thru -10 or stock for PCV or -16 or Stock for Crank Case vent). Cad Models will be shown if you are interested in this option. Also to finish off this modification I will offer a cover for the Coilpacks that matches the tops of my Cam Covers. These should be quite a bit cheaper because of the reduction in material and the fact that its just a decorative cover (not air tight Cam Covers). Again a Cad model will have to suffice for now.

These were/are a very difficult item to produce and the fact that they interface with so many items makes their production and design so difficult.

What I need is a head count of all of you that are serious about these and ready to put down your money on these. The reason Im asking up front is these are very costly in materials and machine time. They are so difficult I might not do these again. If you do purchase the cam covers from me now I will promise to finish a center cover for those that get in on this first (and possibly ONLY) lot of parts.

I realize there are a few un-answered questions. I feel my work speaks for itself, I will provide a cad model (3D shaded image) like you saw before to show you what the final product will look like. If you want to see the difference between what I modeled and what came off of the machine, I will show you, the real thing, is exactly like what I modeled. It will still be couple weeks before I have the left side done, but thats only because of machine time limitations (I am the small spender in this shop at the moment) If I get a decent sized order, I/we will quickly become a priority.

I anticipate final products within 6 weeks of the last person to pay. This would give all of you attending SILV 07 enough time to get them installed before the event.

I will offer these for $695.00 for this first batch. Remember I need at least 6 people to commit to these for there to ever be more than one set. The factory Coilpack relocation kit will be an additional $60.00 bucks, and include the fasteners.

For your $695 you will get 2 Cam covers and all associated hardware to install the Baffles and the Oil cap filler neck.

Edit: The price for Cam Covers, is $695. I was loosing my butt on these at original introductory price.

are you still going to be making a center cover like the jz engines?

Andy I'm definately in. Can you show us what the coil pack relocation piece/kit will be like, both for oem coils as well as Tooquik COPs? Also will we be able to customize the center piece (most importantly vent wise)?
And finally, what sort of time frame are we talking about here?

arz
07-26-2007, 04:47 PM
Sorry I never gave any thought to how soon I would need any money. I guess we will wait until we have 6 people If we get close I guess I could cover a few on speculation.

YES I will make a center piece for every one of you guys (that wants it) that get in on this first buy.

For the center piece (coilpack covers) if you first guys are willing to commit funds I might let you guys kinda steer my design (IE: I will show you a few ideas and then ask your opinions about which ones you like the best).

As for 2Quicks COP mod, I would advise to wait on purchasing anything until you see what I have already designed.

How heavy will they be? (ie, how much is it going to cost me to get them shipped to Australia)The un-finished one you saw in the first photos weighed less than 3 lbs, I still have material to remove so I cant imagine they will weigh much more than 6-7 lbs total (3.17 kilos) not too much different from the stock ones, in weight and obviously the exact same shipping size.

Maybe a tiny bit more including a dozen fasteners or more.

OK, this is how its going to work, you guys get on this list as soon as we have 4 people I will request half payment ($300 dollars US) immediately, (this will be non refundable if YOU want to back out, if I cant do it I will refund you the money). If you call me and say you crashed your car I keep the money, if you can find a person to take your slot, thats fine too. You guys will have to work it out and I wont send the product if there is a debate about who get the product.

I really hate being like this but I have seen tons of stupid stuff happen with things like this.

If we get more than 10 I will drop the price even more, but this first time will be the only time for a price reduction, and remember this first time might be the ONLY time. These are crazy complicated!!!!

Here is the list, we already have one to step up to the plate!!!!

Hmm, i'm not sure what the usual shipping company is in the US but I just threw a few details into the calculator on UPS.com for a 8 lb package from AZ to Australia and I'm looking at approx $150 USD... All up I'd need about $720 AUD for the parts + shipping... not sure if I can justify that for cam covers.

I'll have to think about it... :)

See if USPS is cheaper, I think they have a "Slow boat to China" option. LOL I almost hesitate to offer that because my distributor had a package take over 6 months to get to Australia, they both thought it was lost and forgot about it for a couple of months, when it finally showed up.

Woah woah woah, MAN IM SORRY TO GET YOU GUYS ALL EXCITED ABOUT THIS. I just got off the phone with my Machinist and he saw this thread and called me right away and squared me away on some things. There was some miscommunication about what he was charging me for this and that, and I have to raise the price considerablly. Im VERY VERY sorry!!! I will contact those that have put their names down and see what I can do.

The price is going to have to be $695 for the pair of Cam Covers and fasteners.

All of the previous rules will stand and I will edit the posts.

Sorry but no, its $695 for just the two covers and related hardware.

For your $695 you will get 2 Cam covers and all associated hardware to install the cam covers on the head and the Oil Baffles and the Oil cap filler neck.

No Oil Cap, No AN fittings, and no Cam Cover Gasket, I am working on the Coil pack cover and will offer those later to all that have purchased a set from me.

Sorry for the confusion.

Tell ya what when I get caught up on my bills I'd deff be down to buy some but by that time comes the group buy will be over... :(This really isnt a Group buy, its more of a launch buy. If you know you want them and you are definitely going to buy I would be willing to hold your parts as much as 3 months after their done.

Remember you will pay $300 up front and then the next half when they ship. If you need me to, I can hold on to these as long a 3 months after they have been machined, this might give some of you on the fence a little nudge. Hope this shakes a few of you guys out of the "waiting tree".

No worries, I wasn't worried about finger pointing. I'm relatively certain I'm going to want these anyway, and three months gives me plenty of time to pay for them. The only thing I'm wondering about is relocating the coilpacks and what the middle cover will look like... Mind you, I've had nothing but admiration for your designs to date, so I'm sure it'll look awesome.

arz

.....The only thing I'm wondering about is relocating the coilpacks and what the middle cover will look like... Mind you, I've had nothing but admiration for your designs to date, so I'm sure it'll look awesome.Imagine another one of those loafs of bread in between the two Cam Covers. It will be raised up about 3/4" to 1" higher than the Cam Covers and match the corner radius of the Cam Covers. It will be designed so that the height can be adjusted to clear different design coils or COP designs. If your COP's are lower, theoretically you will be able to lower the cover enough to make the center cover match the height of the Cam Covers.

For those that aren't FFIM the cover will probably split there or drop down to clear the crossover tube. I already have the coil pack mounting finished and the wiring changes sorted out.

I will provide installation instructions for all. As soon as these are on my car I will start to mock up the throttle cable relocation kit so you can all ditch that ugly bell crank and mount.

Yblegal91t
08-21-2007, 06:50 PM
it would look cool if you had them so you set them down as one. installed at teh same time. just have a 1/4" flat piece designed between them at the top and have a hole at teh back for the spark plugs wires. only thing is that the whole thing would have to be taken off to check/change sparkplugs but thats nothing. It would look like athe 1jz and 2jz but chrome and a hellof a lot nicer.

oh and i wasnt saying your time and work isnt worth it, your work is top notch. if i was rich i would give you the money to have 10 made. Im in debt right now and still buying stuff thats why i said that. sorry

^^^ I think that means its a GO right now!!! ^^^

Remember this post (http://www.supramania.com/forums/showpost.php?p=696232&postcount=187)

I am so excited that these things are a "GO" I will call my machinist and have him order material as soon I get a PP for $300 from each of you. You five are definitely IN!!! You will all receive a PM before the end of this weekend!!! If you want to be proactive my PP is ArizonaPerformance@cox.net make sure to state: Deposit for Billet Cam Covers in the notes, also state your SM alias in the notes too sometimes my wife has a hard time deciphering who's who when she is looking at just, the paperwork.

For those of you just watching a waiting, these things are so complicated and there is such little margin for profit and I have spent so much time getting CMM points and data and modeling them that I will surely loose money if I counted all the hours I have already spent. I am choosing to think of it as making parts I love to make. I probably wont be making many if any extras. If you think that you might want a set of these, you better decide soon, once my CNC guy orders material, it will be too late.

Please, if you think you want these, get in on them as soon as possible!!!

OK Im done begging you, I will call my CNC guy tomorrow (yes he works on Saturday) and we will cut the PO and he will order material next week.

We will work on the left side Cam Cover first so you can see a finished set. As soon as we have a left and right I will present center cover designs and explain and show the details on how they install. These are VERY custom, you will like how it all comes together.

Thanks again to everybody that has agreed to purchase these, you wont be disappointed the complete solution will look awesome.
