Tyler,
Good luck with your build!

Remember it's not about how much money you put into your car it's how much enjoyment you get out of it! Some of the coolest cars I've ever owned have been the cheapest built, of course they weren't the safest, prettiest or longest lasting, but man they were fun to drive!

I need to locate an oil leak as well as something is burning white smoke next to the exhaust manifold on the first cylinder by the CPS next to the power steering resevoir. more to come on that when i get the engine bay cleaned up.

The majority of these parts are simply to replace all of the stock rubber hoses and old parts to make sure she is maintained and up to good stock running condition. I want good reliability with some play on the weekends!

hope that clears up some things if anyone was wondering. ive got a hellova build coming up just to get where i wanna clean up some things and get her running very nicely daily.

update:

+replaced valve cover gaskets [old ones were VERY brittle and they snapped with any flex that i gave them when i removed them]
+replaced the o-ring on the CPS [also was very brittle]
+changed my oil. added 10-W30. summer, here i come!

so far there is no more oil leaks from what i have dont today. i also cleaned up several parts and checked my turbo. little to no shaft play and things are looking good!

most of the maintainence is getting done like i had already planned. should be pressure washing the engine bay here in a day or two and finally replacing the starter and the belts just to make sure. more updates in awhile.

ive got pics of the valve cover replacement, ill have to get them off my phone.

hopefully some people check into this thread alittle bit. but ive been doing some thinking here tonight and am looking at picking up a block with crank, pistons, rods, all in it. i have a spare cyilnder head too. would it be too terribly hard to build a motor up from scratch and make it all work? i figure taht if u have most of the internals, all ud have to do is send it to the machine shop and get her put all nice and start from the ground up. might be cheaper in the long run. im just looking for another 7m-gte to have just incase mine poops on me... ideas?

suprahero
05-15-2007, 11:21 PM
Looking good sir. If you have a motor to rebuild and you have the money to rebuild it, then it would be a great idea to do. Once you get it built, you could swap the motors out and sell or rebuild the old one. Good luck either way.

Looking good. It's not about the money, it's about the pride and care you give your car. I would rather see a young guy who takes care of and appreciates his MKIII rather than a spoiled brat whose parents bought him an MKIV.

CampbellsChunkySoupra
05-16-2007, 06:16 PM
hah. thanks for the advice. i scrapped the idea of building up a spare motor until i have the money for the FULL build. for now ill just keep maintaining this one. i need to pay for school, the car itself, and the girlfriend/wife :D ...lol... jokez.

thanks for the input so far. ill have more updates here in a week when i get my guage pod and other little goodies. should be fixing a front main seal leak soon too.

contemplating whether or not i want to pick up a 1jz head/block and play with that for awhile or there is this 1g-gte complete motor too. my mind tells me yes, but my wallet is telling me no. we'll see.

any thoughts/opinions supramania?

oohhh boy...here we go with the engine recommendations. This might turn into another "battle of the engines"

It really depends on your purposes and which engine you prefer (for looks, performance, feel, etc)

We all know any Supra engine you choose is a nice engine.

i agree wit him^^^ mkiii-driftking^^^ it depends on the purpose...

but if i didnt sell the supra and had the money i wanted to do a 1jz swap w/ bpu for DD and a lil weekend fun. :D

but yea i guess it also depends on ur budget too.

wow your supe is really turning out nice!...And about all the motor Q's, i'd just go ahead and spend the money on that 7M you have in it. That thing is still real reliable and to do any other swaps, 1J, 2J, 1G, all them swaps will probably take you close to a year to finish. Due to searching for all parts and what not and spend thousands on it slowly. When you can already do a FULLY BUILT 7M reliable. Just my 2 cents! Now go take that thing on the track. :D

CampbellsChunkySoupra
05-30-2007, 10:41 AM
hah, the track wont let me take it there yet. i still have some minor oil leaks that replacing the valve covers and CPS oring didnt fix. so im now moving on to the front main and the cam seals. ill be ordering those this week and hopefully doing them this weekend if weather permits. once the oil leaks are fixed, i ASSURE you, i will be at the track!

-Tyler

CampbellsChunkySoupra
06-10-2007, 03:04 AM
ok. so a few things have changed recently. ive since scrapped the 1jz/1g-gte options and ive decided to stay with the current 7m. in a week or two, ill be pulling the motor to finally fix all of the oil leaks that i have yet not been able to fix. ill be buying a gasket kit and replacing pretty much everything other then the headgasket [it has a MHG already]

should be cleaning the motor up as well as the engine bay and finally getting her up to the status that she needs to be at. ive got a few things that i still need to fix but its going alrigh. ill be ordering an HKS ssqv here soon to i think.

what else should i look into replacing or checking when i pull the motor?

-Tyler

Cps o-ring,front and rear crankshaft seals, cam shaft seals, and rear timing belt cover gasket.

CampbellsChunkySoupra

cool. ive already replaced the cps o-ring and ive got a set of cam seals so those are checked off the list. now to find my gasket kit!

CampbellsChunkySoupra
06-13-2007, 11:42 PM
ordered my FULL ENGINE Gasket kit. should be anything and everything ill need to replace the oil leaks that are pissing me off.

i also have code 51/52 to fix while the motor is out. might be something as simple as plugging back in the knock sensor or re wiring it like ive been reading... we'll see when next wednesday comes to pull it.

after i get it pulled, fixed, cleaned, and put back in im going to be purchasing a jz series motor. not sure on which one yet. we'll see. ill have more info on that later.

oh yeah... i will have a TON of pictures from the pull..

Hey Tyler you doing all the work yourself? I have my head and block are at harveys by you right now and Jerry's doing the work on them. My bills 2600 right now! Mine's being bored and the head and valves are being redone and im gonna run some wiseco pistons this time. Motor selection....hmmm. That's a tough one, the 1jz is cheaper but i personally like the 2JZ better. I'll be watching your build and ill have pics soon because my engine should be back by this weekend and my turbos on its way back from SP. Keep us posted. 515.

CampbellsChunkySoupra
06-14-2007, 12:01 AM
nice. hah, there was a 2jz up at harveys about a month ago on a full build. hes a really good buddy of mine too. haveys does pretty good work. jerrys is a good guy for the most part. he'll rape u on a few things. but yes they do good stuff. im not totally set on the 1jz. if it comes to that, ill just import one.

uhm, im pulling it with the guy that has the 2jz build going [imagine that] we are replacing all gaskets except for the HG because i have an HKS MHG. unless we deem it neccessary to replace it. otherwise im just cleaning things up and replacing a few things. u know, make her a little bit more reliable. stuff like that. plus im trying to get track ready so thats my goal at this point. my turn up the boost if i can ever get these codes and oil leaks figured out.

-Tyler

Emik87t
06-14-2007, 12:07 AM
Ya i thought it was pretty pricey but hopefully he'll do me good because he used to drag race and be a good friend of my unlce Tony. He had another 7m in there and he was telling me about the guy who just had the 2jz done. Keep us posted on the track, where you going? When you going? Hell if i'm done and broke in i might be interested in running with ya, if you don't mind. LMK.

CampbellsChunkySoupra
06-14-2007, 12:21 AM
Burntz- when i get the HG ill see how good it is and ill see if ill get rid of it

Emik87t- heh. nice... we will usually run up at the newton 1/8th. i need to fix my oil leak and get a battery tie down and then im track ready. i need to tune it abit. usually newton has drags every other friday night. there is a 1/8th strip down in eddyville too. thats about an hour from me. probably an hour and a half from you. they have drags all weekend long. good track too. has sticky compound down and a burnout box too.

heh, it'd be killer to have 2 mkiii's and a 2jz running here in iowa...

ive been having my supra out on the street quite abit lately [not street racing] but these codes are killing me so its not fun to "boost but not boost" if u will.

Tyler screw the JZ series.. go 1G-GZE, that's right supercharged!

Hey Emik87t, welcome to SM. So you have a build going at Harvey's good luck getting out of there cheap. They do a good job, but for the same work on a V8 you'll spend a $500 or more on an Inline 6... Both M series and JZ series, but i guess they do a good job so i keep going back.. For just machine work and a few parts they charged me $2296.46.. I bought my pistons and rods at wholesale so i didn't include that in the final total.

Sorry I'm bitching ha ha, they do great work though! My cylinder head is freaking amazing! This thing will really flow more than stock.

Anyways hope to see you around nice Supra in your avatar.

Emik87t
06-14-2007, 10:19 AM
Lee Ma61, ya they're pretty pricey but i wanted someone to do it that could do it and do it right, and jerry said he does quite a few supra motors so i went with someone i could trust...due to my uncle tony.
Mr. Soup, ya i go to eddyville to watch the drags on big holiday weekends and ill be there june 30th for the big 4th of july show. We went to the Topeka Nationals 2 weeks ago and it was f-N awesome. I got to see John/Ashley Force and get autographs, and Tony Schu from Army and Gary White from Titan driving his turbo celica, and he ran like a 6.32 in the 1/4. My family has always been into drag racing and 2 of my unlces, my aunt, and my dad have drag raced. One of my unlces drag raced for a long time and my other still has his 800hp capri. I'm not sure when my car will be ready cause right now im hoping to have the damn motor by the weekend. I'll let you know when it arrives, cause ill have pictures.

i ordered a gasket set and got it today. it says 7m-ge. the ebay auction listed it as a turbo 7m-gte set. im using some of the gaskets/seals. definatly NOT using the headgasket because i have a MHG. what do u guys think? is it safe and okay to use the rest of it?

Pulling engine today...

Well we are going to have fun with that after work.. As for thursday I have an eye doctors appointment, so I don't know what that is going to do to me and my schedule.

Can you post an Ebay.com auction number/link to the auction you won. That way others can review it.

Thanks Tyler,

yeah, so i started the engine pull tonight and after 5+ hours, some bloody knuckles, too much oil on parts to get solid grips, and some real PITA's, the engine/trans is out and on a pallet. tomorrow im cleaingn out the engine bay and the engine.

anyways,i broke my motor mounts so check out my wtb thread ASAP or let me know if u have some stock ones for an 89 7m-gte. thanks! more to come, including pics!

BIG UPDATE:

So we started the engine pull process. i have several pictures. my whole goal for this project was to fix oil leaks and fix the knock sensor problem and any other problems that we could find.

ended up braking the altenator tension bolt, BOTH motor mounts, and found out i had a toasted knock sensor. [not to mention all of the oil leaks]

not to mention this sucked alot because the only time to do it was at night time. and today it rained. the engine is ready to be dissasembled to start a-fixing though. enjoy!

So tonight after you left I got a little anal and kind of reorganized the mess we had going. Now we have a nice organized work space again!! Not to mention a table for all your parts, that's right your turbo isn't sleeping on the ground tonight.

Anyways everything is back in my normal organization and should make at least me happy.

:hsugh:

Peace,

here is a shot of the supra how she was sitting last night before we pushed her down the hill back into the driveway... notice the crap hanging out the bottom? wheelgap?

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a82/prymetyme4/supraasshesits.jpg

also, when i turned the motor over, oil started to poor pretty steadily out of the valve covers or the spark plug galley. it was kinda wierd because i had drained the oil the night before. might just be left over, but my spark plug wires/plugs are still in. so i dunno, might just be emptying it out. could be a problem?

im still awaiting the new knock sensor and the motor mounts. once the stuff gets back from the cleaning job it will surely be more assembled with more pics!

thanks for viewing, and enjoy!

Dont tank that throttle body.

Lee_MA61
06-24-2007, 09:26 PM
My favorite part of today was the oil was pouring out of parts of the head that should be leaking oil...

What does it mean??? Well I thought about this after you left. Oil may have leaked into the spark plug wells when you had those bad cam cover seals. So after a leaking for a while they more than likely created pools of oil in your around your spark plugs, then empty when urned over. Take Sharpies MX-6 for example. I don't think it was a bad thing though, just something that happened as a result of those leaking cam covers.

Hey maybe now that they aren't full of oil your car might run better!!

CampbellsChunkySoupra
06-24-2007, 09:38 PM
yeah. no kidding. thats mostly what i was thinking too.

what about not tanking the throttle body?

CampbellsChunkySoupra
06-25-2007, 11:54 PM
oh, thats a shame.. no one has posted yet and i actually pulled the motor and have been tearing into it :(

parts are at the machine shop getting hot-tanked to get it all cleaned up nice and deep like. i sent in the oil pan/bolts, upper and lower intake plenum, exhaust manifold.

i will also be painting my heat shields with a high heat engine paint. they will be done in a flat black color. hopefully it turns out nicely!

So yeah I thought tonight was going quite well until the "audience" showed up.. Then I was kinda of a dick and fell asleep in a huge box of packing peanuts and the back seat of my Supra. Sorry Tyler.

I'm happy it fired up tonight :D. I'll let you fill in the rest of Supramania! ha ha

CampbellsChunkySoupra
06-30-2007, 02:36 AM
I'm Tyler.

the supra runs. she has a VERY LOUD vacuum leak on the intake side back by the fuel pulsation dampener. it has a sqeaky belt and the power steering setup is leaking. there is NO OIL leaks anymore from what i have seen.

tomorrow i will have it completely put back together including the interior and engine bay and the other little pieces but all in all it wasnt that bad.

would i do it again? F*CK NO!

the 7m-gte is SO much harder then the 5m/6m. RAWR! sorry, im doing a little venting. i had no food/drink for like 9 hours tonight and i was shaking at one point when putting the clutch slave back in. it wasnt too bad. it can be done with MUCH PATIENCE!

oh yeah, the gasket kit i baught off ebay was trash. im calling the pricks tomorrow and demanding my money back. we had to make several gaskets. absolutly garbage for gaskets. anyways...

oh yeah: i shot a fireball out of my muffler on the first start up!

Ok , leon and tyler, got it. Jerry just said that leon talked to my on the internet and was asking about my build and that you have a 2JZ. ??? I said dude i dont know them by anything other than campbells chunky soupra and Lee MA61. And damn he's expensive, $2862 was my bill!!!

Lee_MA61
06-30-2007, 09:38 AM
Ha ha that's jerry for ya..

Yeah he's kinda of expensive.. I was about $200 off of yours with the 2J. What all did you have done? and did you buy any parts from them??

Emik87t
06-30-2007, 09:53 AM
they ordered my cometic HG, wiseco pistons, some misc gaskets, rods/mains, and some more misc shit, but he bored it 40 over, did a valve job( the head was $500) blue printed and balanced it, polished the crank and a bunch of other stuff, i'll have all the details in my build. My invoice was like 9 pages long.

Lee_MA61
06-30-2007, 11:20 AM
Ha ha yeah 9 page invoices... I had all the same stuff done minus pistons and rods, I bought those at wholesale from a friend. So my bill from Harvey's with the little shit and performance stuff was ~$2600. Add the pistons and rods in and it was ~$3,650.

Bored 40 over, so now you are a true 3 liter. ha ha

Emik87t
07-01-2007, 02:14 AM
So leon, what's the 2J in? Your mk2?

CampbellsChunkySoupra
07-01-2007, 01:14 PM
leon's 2jz is going in his mk2.

anyways, the motor is back in and it runs. the paint was burning off of the manifold. so far the heat shields are good. ive got a pretty bad vaccuum leak on the intake side of things that i have to diagnose yet. otherwise i think we are doing pretty good.

oh, i was driving it home from Lee_MA61's and it started to get a pretty good vibration in the steering wheel up around 50 mph. i kept her at 45 on cruise and it was ok. i need to put my interior back together today and try to find that vaccuum leak. its dropping the idle really low so it tries to kill itself.

ill have more later!

CampbellsChunkySoupra
07-01-2007, 06:56 PM
so i was driving it again today. im having idle issues with the vacuum leak. it is screaming loud. i couldnt exactly fit my hand on the hose that was doing it. ill get some soapy water tomorrow to try to locate it and eliminate it. hopefully its not just some pin-prick sized hole. im almost positive that it between the firewall and the upper intake manifold.

i got my interior back together and took all of the parts/tools out of the supra. dvd player is working and i cant wait to watch the fast and the furious on my next decently sized trip.

next issue: the car has some vibration at higher cruising speeds. i dont have full Power Steering at this point because it is leaking so maybe its half trying to use it and half not? ive read about the driveshaft sometimes causing this? anyone have any ideas. it gets kinda jerky in the steering wheel. the car shakes alittle bit too. i dunno.

CampbellsChunkySoupra
07-02-2007, 03:03 AM
anyone have any ideas for the previous post that i made? i also am looking for a daily driver. might have one here pretty quick. then i can REALLY tear into this bitch!

oh, would u guys kill me if i sold this thing?

Lee_MA61
07-02-2007, 08:31 AM
.....

As for the vacuum leak we need to buy a Felpro kit for the intake plenum. Then we can get all the correct parts. Unlike that other gasket kit you bought were we made almost 90 percent of the gasekets/seals. IMHO.

CampbellsChunkySoupra
07-02-2007, 07:43 PM
alright, so i think we narrowed down the vibration at higher speeds to my front left tire being shitty. its got some bubbles. i need to replace that soon.

still working on the vacuum leak.

my temp guage isnt working right now. i think the clip broke when we pulled it out. so i just ran some wire to the connector on the water temp sensor and still dont have any readings in the cockpit. hmm?

anyone know how hard it is to install a mkiv fuel pump in the mk3? i read about it once i think and its pretty much direct?

turns out that the lugnuts that i had on the sawblade werent actually holding the wheel on good enough and the sawblade managed to open up its holes where the studs go threw and the wheel flew out. the studs ALL had their lug nuts still on them. it should all buff out. :D *note: sarcasm.

its not going to be too bad. actually, it sucks because my dad JUST took my full coverage off earlier this week. hell, i coulda made some money off of this.
