View Full Version : New Clutch Kits! 6 Puck Sprung Or Stock Disk!
bigaaron

Driftmotion is now having clutches made to order for us by Action Clutch.
These are rated at 2800lbs, and with the 6 puck disk it will handle ~500whp. A 40% increase in torque capacity with the upgraded pressure plate and a stock Toyota disk, and a 70% increase over stock with the upgraded pressure plate and a 6 puck disk is what Action rates it at.
I run an upgraded pp and stock disk on my 7m and it's seen 420whp and many many dyno pulls, burnouts, launches etc... If you daily drive it and want to make around 400whp then that's the best setup imho. If you want to put a big turbo on it with lots of boost and/or do a lot of drag racing then go with the 6 puck. The 6 puck may chatter just a little bit at very low rpm, but that is common with most multi puck disks. The first time you drive it you will get used to how to modulate the throttle and clutch and it will not be a bother after that.
The upgraded pp with 6 puck sprung disk will be $515 with a new piliot bearing and throwout bearing.
The upgraded pp with Aisin stock disk will be $425 with a new piliot bearing and throwout bearing.
The 6 puck sprung disk by itself will be $155
The 2800lb pressure plate by itself will be $325.
I will have it added to the website sometime this weekend.

Which ACT PP did you use?. I have the HD in my car now and its great but I think I will be exeding the tq rating on it soon. Have you ever used the ACT Xtreme PP?

I actually have a TRD pp on my car, which I hear was made by ACT for TRD. It's not a super heavy pp, similar to the one in this new kit. The thing I would worry about on the 3500lb clutches is the wear on your thrust bearing. Plus the wear on your left leg :biglaugh: If you really need something that will handle 700ft/lbs you may want to look into a twin disk clutch setup, but then your looking at about 3-4 times as much money as a clutch kit like this.
I just put the "stage 3" clutch up on the website:

I have had the TRD clutch before and it was great, it held 440 whp no problem. I just need something to hold 500-600 whp/tq. I am shyimng away from the RPS 3200PP to avoid crankwalk and I dont like really stiff cluthces either.

From what Action was saying, 550ft/lbs is a conservative estimate for this clutch.

How do I break this in? Burnout or stop n' go traffic?

Just take it easy and no burnouts for 500 miles, and you should be just fine.

What clutch setup do you recommend for a 700 hp setup?
bigaaron
05-07-2007, 07:06 PM
for 700whp, your probably going to need a twin plate clutch. I don't have one in stock, but they start at around $1700.

That hurt aaron:aigo: are you sure I can't suppot 700 with a single disc? Please say yes
bigaaron
05-07-2007, 08:30 PM
Support it for how long? 700hp is a lot of power, but the clutch setup is usually rated in torque. If you are at 700 crank hp, and 600tq, it would probably not slip. I haven't tested anything at the kind of power so I don't want to tell you it will be fine and then have it slip on you.

Would it be Ok to use with Fidanza flywheel? Or, should I use a stock flywheel?

looking at a GT4088 on a 1JZ aaron......think this will hold up to slipping at the track???
what material is the disc btw?
bigaaron
05-30-2007, 03:37 AM
The disk uses a ceramic/metallic material. It will handle slipping, but it grabs a lot better then a stock clutch at higher horsepower. Bisi uses the same type of disk on his record setting fwd drag car. Slap that gt4088 on there and go tear it up, this clutch will not let you down.

Interested, need something that'll hold ~750ft/lbs though. Recommendations? Do you have an estimate as of when you might be doing the run of light weight 1JZ flywheels?
Oh and I received that bell-housing Friday, very nice!
Thanks a lot,

Oh no, you let the cat out of the bag on the flywheels. :icon_wink
Devellopment is under way.....
As far as a 750ft/lb clutch, that would require a twin plate. I can get an Exeddy for you, I need to check the current pricing on monday though. Remind me on monday please. :)

I'll order one (6puck kit) very soon (before 15th August), but since shipping to Russia is problem for most vendors, I'll buy it with help of my partner... So, You'll get payment from New York ;-)
BTW, how long it takes (generally) to ship there?

This clutch is amazing. It grabs like a mofo and I love the way it shifts. It's alot smoother than the last six puck I had and I give it a ten out of ten. The only thing yet to be determined is how long it lasts. I have a lead foot and race more than most people on here. This is my honest opinion for what it's worth and I will not hesitate to buy another one if this one ever wears out. Thanks, Jay

I've just picked my kit (6 puck) and found Toyota (aisin) pp inside Action Clutch box...
WTF, I thought I'll get enforced pressure plate... Or Action Clutch just modifies OEM to make them harder?
PS: sorry, I'm noob in clutches
suprahero
08-27-2007, 11:26 PM
I think I read that it an upgraded Toyota pressure plate.
bigaaron
08-27-2007, 11:32 PM
Aisin is the only manufacturer of the clutch cover for this model clutch, so almost all the pp's on the market are a heat treated Aisin pp. The only other option is a dual diaphram, but then you will have crank walk issues and master cylinders blowing out. There is a picture of the pressure plate at the top of this thread. The pressure plate is disassembled and the spring is heat treated, then it is reassembled.
Mr. Y
08-28-2007, 07:24 AM
Thanks for explanation.
I'll report some feedback after clutch will be installed.
bigaaron
08-28-2007, 12:38 PM
Make sure you put 500 miles of normal easy driving (read: no dyno, no burnout, no drag racing) on it first, the break in is very important. If you don't do the proper break in the disk can glaze over in spots and you will have problems.
Mr. Y
08-28-2007, 07:45 PM
Ok, installed clutch today (with stock resurfaced flywheel). I'm impressed... It feels like stock (pedal isn't hard at all. Are you sure pp is upgraded? ;-) but grabs harder (It's my first 6-puck clutch actually). Now break-in and some drag-racing then.
PS: I have to retune my EMS (for new turbo setup), so can I go WOT in 3rd gear (after careful shift)? or clutch can slip and glaze (if not broke-in completely yet)?
bigaaron
08-28-2007, 08:21 PM
I would try to restrain from wot pulls until after the break in if you are making a lot of hp. The pp spring is heat treated to give more spring pressure then stock.
Mr. Y

Got mine installed (finally). Just breaking it in, and it's grabby as hell (stock clutch was too though when breaking in), and it does chatter a bit, but not too bad...
Pedal pressure is higher, but bearable.
Overall, I'm happy. It should hold up to anything I throw at it once it's broken in...

Question with this clutch:
I have this clutch but with a 3200lb PP. I find when it heats up from a lot from clutch feathering while in traffic and such i gain a rather loud vibration when releasing the clutch pedal. It happens at the point where it starts to grab and i feel it a lot inthe pedal, when pedal is fully released i don't feel/hear it anymore. Even if im not in gear at the same 'vibrating point' i feel it a little bit pushing in and out the pedal. Ever hear of this problem since you guys deal with this clutch kit quite a bit??? BTW if anything it sounds like a grinding noise

Nice to know. I am still dramatized from my 7M's crankwalk, which I attribute to my 3200lbs-RPS pressure plate.
Does anyone else, including Aaron obviously, have any more input.
Thank you, Suprahero.

No problems here.. its only a 2800lb PP. thats really nothing in the scheme of things but plenty to hold decent power.
At this particular level you wont see crankwalk, its a higher quality version of the ACT 6 puck with HD-PP IMO and so many ppl swear by those with all different sorts of engines it isn't even funny, so dont worry at all man.
Aaron wouldn't sell you something that would screw up your car. Otherwise he wouldn't be so revered and respected on these boards

We always try to keep the clutch kits in stock. Even when we are out of stock, more kits are only a couple business days away.
Everything I put on our website is like that, with the exception of back orders once in a while that are out of our control, everything I put on the website is either in stock or can be in stock within a few business days.

This is the one I use. I"ve made numerous passes down the track and it holds the power I make easily. The most I dyno'd when I was running this was 543rwhp. Since then I"ve dyno'd at 614 and 561 torque, but I haven't made it to the track yet. I don't think I'll have any problems though. For what it's worth, that's my two cents.

Four month update. I'm running the Stage 4 setup with no issues. I'm around 440 at the wheels and put about 1200 miles on this clutch setup. Might be selling the whole drivetrain soon and going V160.
