installing different vpc chip

Does it matter which way it goes in? I swapped out from the 440 to the 550 and just want to make sure I have it put in correctly

yup, it sure does. look for a notch on the chip and match it up with pin 1 on the board.

You must put it in correctly, a friend of mine ruined his VPC doing just that and had to send it back for repair..
