I'm building a new box in the spring. I'm bringing it back another 4", placing the driver on top, and increasing port area 4 fold. That shitty PG amp is also being tossed for a matching eD one.

Why yes it is :)

The amp is underrated at 1200wrms (puts out about 1400wrms with the engine running), and it POUNDS.

And BoostLee, how's the SQ on that sub? 800wrms and that super thick surround make it look like its a SPL fartmonster.

Haha. Well, to my surprise, it sounds amazingly clean!

I hooked it up last night, currently only 220wrms @ 4 ohms with 10 gauge wire (TINY), tuned the amp a little bit for about 5 minutes, and it's loud enough in car that it makes you feel clausterphobic because it's hard to breath, your hair gets tingly and your chest suddenly feels as if you've just ran around the block. :runaway:

It's honestly WAY to much for my needs...but for the price I get this new stuff for and it's always nice to have that extra oomph when needed, I'd say I'm completely impressed with it. :)

Our installers have convinced me to go ahead and get 4 gauge and run it at 2 ohms because 220wrms amp + 800wrms sub = ....barely over 1/4 its power potential.

I've always completely underestimated Power Acoustik because I looked at it as a "Flea market" type of speaker...but I am 100% thoroughly impressed. :icon_bigg

That's suppose to mean that it's NOT a $45 subwoofer.

I'm a general goer for what SOUNDS GOOD, LOOKS GOOD and is a GOOD PRICE...IDGAF about "Ohhh noesssss, teh' JL AWWWWDIO DUBBBZZZ 7'zzzzzzz"...

Unfortunately, my main focus in my old school Toyota car is not to be bumpin'z teh' windowz off' my car.

Fubar is an odd name to be used for a speaker, Agreed, but judging ANYTHING solely by it's name is closeminded, ignorant and very annoying.
And that applies for ANYTHING, not just car audio.

i'm an audiophile, so the subwoofers i have set up are more than capable of chattering your teeth, but i dont always listen to music like that. i am all about quality, trust me i know. i spent over $200 on just me earbuds, i love quality... But when the time comes and you hear some tin-can honda bumpin a house subwoofer ya gotta represent that! lolz and no the amp on top isn't the 1900w. its a 900 almani.. more pics soon with the new amp!

Dirgle
03-06-2007, 11:21 PM
It's not a 1900 watt amp. It's an ALMANI PA900.2, it's a bargin basement amp. It can't even produce its claimed 900 watts at 1 ohm. The amp just doesn't have the back bone for that much power at 1 ohm. In the real world the best it can do is maybe 720 watts at 2 ohms of unclean, speaker destroying, bridged power. It's just another SPL special from china. It's only designed to produce sound pressure, not actual sound, at the cost of ruining any speakers you hookup to it in short order. I'm not sure where he got 1900 watts.

That's sick man! First time I've seen a w7 in a supra... That's the sub I'm going to be going with once I upgrade my system (after the motorswap, suspension, after the new rims/tires, after the interior, after the paint)... 12" JL w7 powered by a JL 1000/1 amp. Currently I'm just running a 12"w0 off of a JL e1200 amp in a custom built box tuned for 36hz.. sounds fine for now hehe... running two of those w0's in an isobaric (sp?) setup I hit 136db at 36hz... exactly what I tuned it for on the computer.. fun stuff!

its for 2 10" subs...i dont really like 12's anyways as its a little overkill for my taste...but i think this box should sound very nice with some decent subs and power.

yeah i did cut the bottom mount out with a dremel...i have triple A plus so i dont really need a spare tire if i ever get a flat haha...i tried fitting it into the well but the bottom of the carpeted wood frame touches the back of the trunk..so if you look at the top pic where that little notch is on the bottom right of the box, thats where i need to cut straight across so it can fit perfectly.

I'm also going to be doing a setup for my Supra which should be completed approx in 1month. It wont be a crazy setup but I will have the Supra logo in the trunk ;) all made with fibre glass the enclosures, custom back seat side speakers... and all in gloss black, to complement my cars outside.

The way I'll be doing it will give more than ample room for the Aero to slot in, wont have nothing in the way at all.

Small woofer -8"-, but everything fits like stock. Spare, targa, tire change tools and all that jazz. It won't push your head intot he windshield, but gives a nice bump that fills the low end nicely. The amp, xover and a relay arrangement are mounted behind the seats in those enclosures. The 2 black spots are a couple of fans to help cool things as they are pretty tightly contained.

Some pics before the battery relocation, some after. You get the idea...

In North America, we had a false "subfloor" that sits above the spare tire and allows us to have a flat trunk floor with a full size spare. We do lose trunk space because of it though, but can put stuff under the subfloor.

lol, thats alot of miles and doesnt look too bad from the pics i see. my chassi has 92k on it and its darn near mint so i didnt want to cut anything if i didnt have to. it sure would have made the box fit as well as build a lot easier if i didnt have to try and work around that darn spare tire mount.

as soon as I get off my dead ass and on my dying feet my trunk space will be usable again just need to raise the back deck to cover the gear and a wire cage over the Sub hole. right now I lack the tools and the space top do that work. apartments are a mother to try and do car mods in they get all Whiny and crap when ya start making noise and dust I dunno why :)

Dayamn!

Okay I think the bar has been raised here!

Mine looked fairly basic, but I do like my sub enclosures.

Due to a break-in this fall, I'll be rebuilding everything this spring. I've got some nice amps and speakers to install. The subs are still there. The subwoofer enclosures are fastened to the back of the seats, so they move with the rear seats if I fold them down. Leaves some room in the hatch if I need to carry stuff.

my incomplete setup....... I'm still looking for some rubber flexible carpet trim for around the amp. The sub now has a black circular surround so you can't see the battery down there. Plexi goes over the amp as well. I'm also looking for some good pulsating (with the beat) neons/ preferably LEDS. I've also added a bass port since this.

this maintains stock cutout (shape of it anyway), its ability to flip up for easily controlling the amp if needed, jumping the battery, and also still allows use of targa holders :)

Seen some great ideas guys, I had to put in my original tyre (which I think is the factory tyre spare untouched all 225 of her) as I haven't seen an Aus/JDM spec with flat rear carpet. Anywho here's mine;

This is my trunk as of current, took about 8 months to get it started as my neighbor's a busy man (I dont have this skill although I think now in the future I can be creative, but he's the audio engineer man not me hehe) Once we finalised the amp location I will then snuggly run the wiring hidden and nice tucked away so it's still a job in progress :) Current setup is replaced the 4"s at the front with the best 4" Pioneers I could get, Rear 6by9s are JVC CS-FX6902's, the AMP is a JVC AX-6604, and the sub which i'm ordering is a JBL 8" :)

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/3798/cimg0240tc0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I will have the amp remounted properly probably relocated, but that's where it is at the moment, it's a 4x100 watt rms amp with the 6by9s which are 100watt rms themselves. I have a 8inch sub im installing with two channels bridged in a fibreglass enclosure.

Here's a pic looking at the rear from the drivers door.

I'm really confused with the Sub setup, it might be just me.
It looks like the cone is facing down, but I don't see anything that would isolate the front sound wave from the rear sound wave. The bass notes generated from front would cancel out the rear. Is there an opening at the front of the sub that is facing down or is it mounted against a flat board?
Crutchfiled info on sub enclosures (http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.ca/ISEO-rgbtcspd/learningcenter/car/subwoofers_enclosures.html)
Box Design site (http://www.carstereo.com/help/Articles.cfm)

Then there is the second sub in the picture that is sitting on the carpet, what were you going to do with that?
A sub enclosure, sealed or ported, needs to be very solid so that the box does not vibrate or resonate creating unwanted sounds. Thie pictures look like the sub is supported only by 2 posts at each corner.
You did say this was un unfinished project, so maybe things look very different now.

Like i said, its unfinished.....still is (cause im back at school and don't have tools)....i need different subs actually now, i recently discovered the top one was blown :aigo: . Also, the top sub i since fit a circular mounting piece to space between teh floor and woofer for proper excursion. The one recessed into the floor is using a high gloss painted, circular PVC tube i fit. Between the sub and amp towards the back of the hatch i fit another hole for an adjustable length port to catch the sound from the wheel well below. Surprisingly enough, with it still practically being a free air sub it sounds pretty good.

Right now im thinking of ditching the top sub all together and just getting one really good one that can move a lot of air (due to cost issues). Im not lookin for HUGE dB so a sealed enclosure will not be necessary

Like i said, its unfinished... ...the top sub i since fit a circular mounting piece to space it between the floor and woofer for proper excursion. ???? Proper excursion ????
The one recessed into the floor is using a high gloss painted, circular PVC tube I fit. Between the sub and amp towards the back of the hatch i fit another hole for an adjustable length port to catch the sound from the wheel well below. Surprisingly enough, with it still practically being a free air sub it sounds pretty good.
A free air setup does not allow for any air from the back of the woofer to reach the front. The proper way is to make a baffle board (the part you mount the woofer on) that seals one side from the other and uses the trunk as a box. Usually free air are done in sedans there a board seperates the trunk from the inside of the car behind the back seats. I can't see how a port would work in this type of setup.
Right now im thinking of ditching the top sub all together and just getting one really good one that can move a lot of air (due to cost issues). Im not lookin for HUGE dB so a sealed enclosure will not be necessary
A sealed enclosure is not as loud or efficient as a ported box, but can handle more power and has a smoother sound (does not boom). How are you going to measure the frequency of the port that you are "building as a sliding one". The tuning frequency of the port is important as you will want to cut off all frequencies below that note/frequency so that you do not destroy the woofer. Any notes being played below the "tuned frequency" of the port will cause the woofer to float or move back and forth very easily and not produce any sound but overheating the voice coil and destroying the woofer.
It sounds like your setup may be the reason you have blown woofers. but, hey, I'm only guessing based on the information in this thread and my interpretation of it. I strongly suggest you review the links I posted to make sure you follow and understand sub enclosure theory.
Good luck with your new setup.

I just bought a pair of these, jut the newer generation, which I'll be installing this spring. The Audisons replace the Alpines which were stolen, though I also eBayed a pair of replacement Alpines as well. The old V12s were actually really good amps, before Alpine started turning them back into crap again. I'll find a good use for them, I'm sure.

:icon_bigg

-Jeff

I know you said you know a lot about car audio......but you are aware under powering can fuck a speaker just as quickly as overpowering right?? Go big or go blown.

It extends down to the floor and out a bit for more total volume. It clears the sub and sounds great with the targa on or off. I plan to redo it with something almost identical to Swaq's because I don't like having a hacked up trunk. I was smart and bought a second rear carpet and sub floor before I cut anything.:)

Ahh nice to see another audiophile that knows his stuff! Audison is amazing! I love this little amp. I plan to buy 2 more of these amps when i go active and convert my passive 2-ways to active 3-ways... i amp for lows, one for mids and one for tweets, plus i need a nice sound processor... This is all after i get the car rebuilt though :)

Right now im in the process of flush mounting my RE SE 12" in the spare tire well, its gonna be tough because the motor structure on these RE's is absolutely massive. But thats how RE got its reputation for some of the strongest bottom end bass in the world.

Which is good for Fi. The Re's are still some of the best subs in the world IMHO. Nothing i have ever heard has has as deep a bottom end as RE's. And im comparing with my SE's...

In my 85 I had an 18 inch Kicker and 4 8's that did well too.

My new system is in process of less is more. 2 12's and a component front setup in the doors.

this all i need to say... look at the picture and i can still use my targa top. lol. as far as quality goes they are pioneer premier and if you have ever heard regular premiers the shallow mounts aint no slouches either. the box has like 1 cuft or less per woofer and 1000 watts. and depending on the meter its between 142 and 146. oh yeah when i said equal i ment cleaness of the install. you have anything or what?
http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j148/shenronzero/supra032.jpg

I didn't mean to be that critical, yes its a very clean install, and 146db is quite loud, congratulations. If you look back a few pages you can see my setup 6months back as well.

No they are just mounted with very little clearance (targa top and bottom of subs). Targa still fits over the subs. Next setup I'll be starting once I get home from school. I am looking at removing the rear seats and fiberglassing the 12's in the rear. The amps will be mounted with covers in the hatch. I am also looking at a couple xtant 1000 watt amps (x1000) or possibly audison amps instead of the matts 300hc.

I saw that coming. I have a pair of Boston acoustics 4x6 in the factory rear location. You don't really need anything back there at all. Mine is only used for rear fill. You can't tell they are there unless you turn them off.

I would think that the sound waves from the subs would not only drown out the midbass from the 6x9's but would potentially distort them.

To answer your question, I am not from the Newfoundland Providance, I am from the Ontario Providance....near the village of Toronto.

6x9's suck. Period. Unless your a baller rolling on 24's in your jacked up caprice, 6x9's sound terrible! If you ever have the option to use a round cone, do it. There are reasons the best speakers in the world are 6.5-7" components, and not 6x9's. I would afb up some nice MDF adapters and throw atleast some basic components in there...

Hey IwantMKIII

???? Proper excursion ????

A free air setup does not allow for any air from the back of the woofer to reach the front. The proper way is to make a baffle board (the part you mount the woofer on) that seals one side from the other and uses the trunk as a box. Usually free air are done in sedans there a board seperates the trunk from the inside of the car behind the back seats. I can't see how a port would work in this type of setup.

Good luck with your new setup.

he's right, that set up ain't gonna work. NO way, No how. Buy your self a pre fabbed box pop your working woofer in it and just listen to the difference. Then go build yourself a killer system. I'm always here for info. PM me with questions, 18 years in the car audio biz.

Hi, i am using your set up for my sup...audio set up. I loved it when i first saw it. Ok... I have pioneer speakers the 6by9s now I want to make that setup you have... what kind of wood??? how did you get it to stay where it is now.. wht happened to your cargo cover if any?? I also already have my sub. In a long bazooka... and i also have a nice wood box/case for it also....

Dan_Gyoba

Diana:

That's a fairly simple setup, but it has some drawbacks.

1. The 6X9 speaakers don't seem to be fully baffled, that is, it appears that the rear part of the speakers is just open. I'd recommend putting hte speaker in an enclosed box, for best effect. (This can certainly be done with similar looks, you just need to have a box underneath.

2. For that kind of setup, I'd probably use 1/2" plywood for the board. Inexpensive and simple. The padding and upholstering will make the wood type relatively unimportant.

3. The cargo cover's mounts are visible in the top picture. There's nothing in them, so that's been removed. It does look, however, as though it could be reinstalled, and it would just go over the speakers.

I'm not a fan of rear speakers, particularly not in this car. I spent a lot of time tweaking to get them to sound good, but found that things sounded by far the best when the rear speakers were just removed. Your opinion may vary. 6X9s are nice because of the large cone area. Coupled with a good enclosure they can get decent bass, rivalling some 8" woofers in some cases.

You guys with the big sub boxes using the spare tire area, a question for you, do you guys all have a really good AAA card or do you all have run flat tires.

I am not hating, have been wanting to do something similar to alot of the really nice set-ups in this thread.

Thought I would need to use the rear seats for some of it and make it a two seater. Waiting for my kids to get a little older so won't need the rear seats.

I like to do a lot of mountain road driving..... aka roads which aren't ideally maintained. I have AAA Plus (100mi free towing), but i'm STILL keeping my spare. Fullsized spares are nice, and just incase anything were to happen out of cell phone range, i'd rather limp back to a town then be stranded. Yes, I lose trunkspace, but thats what the backseat is for. And, i think backseat deletes 99% of the time look half asses and don't fit the car.

Very crafty i must say... And acoustically the octibox would sound a little better than a typical square or rectangle... Its very nice that you can hide everything under the carpet. Unfortunately my subs are much too large to fit in that small of a box. They are far too deep. I will be fiberglassing a box for them very soon.

Facime

I was able to make that box 1.5cu/ft which what what my sub called for for a sealed enclosure. It stuck up out of the spare tire well a little and I had to flatten the bottom of the welll with a big ass hammer, but it fit tight enough to fit under the false floor which was my big concern. I liked having a stealth system. My other speakers were just 4" in the rear and the doors running off a 4 channel amp. Wouldnt know there was a system in it unless you heard it.

The octobox was relatively easy to make once I got the math right.

Hey there,

Some very nice set ups in this thread, i thought id throw mine in seeing as i finished it today... not as nice as some of those and im sure people will bag the components but keep in mind they do provide a bit more thump and quality than the dodgy 4" 's i had in the stock rear spots...

head unit is a sony bluetooth equipped unit, does what i need it to, fronts are pioneer 4" in stock location and my new rears are sony 6x9's i got on special for $30au.. bag away fellas but remember this was done on a tight budget and was only after a bit more bass and a larger sound range :) *flame suit on*

The set up:

Ok so i decided to replace the rears with some 6x9's, and i wanted to cover up the shabby looking rear carpet and ugly spare wheel hump in the hatch area... solution? parcel shelf.. i didnt have a 'boot blind' when i got the car so something to keep prying eyes from anything i may have in the hatch would be a bonus.. i also use the car to carry my bike/dog so what ever i came up with had to be somewhat removable...

this is the 'strut' that fits where the stock blind would mount and will provide the hinging point for the actual shelf
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt2.jpg

the parcel shelf its self, note i constructed it of 2 pieces so a small amount of flex would be available for where the hatch hits the very end of the shelf.
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt1.jpg

Got some medium grey carpet from bunnings to cover the shelf with, i decided grey would better suit the interior than black, make it look a bit more like it was meant to be there... glued the carpet on with the same adhesive they use to glue fake turf down.. so it should hold!

strut:
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt11.jpg

Shelf:
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt10.jpg

carpeted and trimmed strut and shelf.. automotive carpet can be trimmed and wont fray on the edges, i decided to cut it to shape as trying to fold it under would have been too bulky to work with, and when the hatch is closed you cant see the edges anyway
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt4.jpg
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt3.jpg

Strut installed:
As mentioned earlier it utilises the stock blind mounting point once the clips were removed and simply bolts to the vertical side of the stock rear speaker/strut cover (unscrewing the bolts allows easy removal)
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt5.jpg

shelf mounted up and attached:
the self simply sits on the flat area of the speaker/strut cover and i have some rubber mounts screwed into the rear plastic trim for the back edges to rest on.. the shelf butts up to the strut bar and the hinges screw down into the shelf, the shelf is then removable by undoing the hinge screws on the shelf side
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt6.jpg

There is 3 hinges along the join, stainless steel hinges cleaned and painted black to blend in a bit better, i also coated the mounting screws:
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt7.jpg

speakers in:
i extended the existing speaker wires and routed them through a hole under the speaker and into the hatch area, these can be threaded back up into the trim for when the shelf isnt in use.
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt8.jpg

view through the back window:
with the hatch closed you cant see the edges of the shelf and it gives it a nice OEM look, the mounting at the strut end, and the pressure of the hatch at the back keep it locked down and avoid any rattles or bouncing whilst in transit:
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt12.jpg

In order to gain access to the boot (trunk for you yankie doodles) when the hatch is up i need set up like standard hatch backs have... at the moment its a bit ghetto as im using left over speaker wire to form a loop that hooks onto the stock blind hooks, they run through the shelf and i have attached old sockets to the ends of the cable to add weight so that when closed the pull back down and stop the loops from being visible and tangling in the closing mechanism. in time i will get some stocky loops from a hatch back and a better weighting system.
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u211/droid001/pt9.jpg

The sound compared to what i did have is extremely good.. a bit too bassy as i havent played with my settings yet..

wow, im pooped after all that, sorry for the big post but i guess if anyone was looking to go down this path it gives a half decent run through

Cheers!

It looks great. What size MDF is that? 1/2"? How much do you think it weighs, seems like MDF would be heavy.

Brap
04-18-2008, 05:06 AM
The strut peice is fibreboard that was laying around at work...

the mdf is only thin, to keep the weight down.. about 6mm i think? i used another strip along the hinging edge to bring it up to the same height as the fibre board

I've seen those at Lowe's and they come in a variety of diameters, but I have not seen 'em that large. I was gonna use a 1-2' tube of that stuff to make an enclosure for my 8" sub. I'll go look for a larrger one again... I may try to do something this weekend.
