So its a tick, not a knock. I thought it would start as a tick and eventually get worse.

I took off my valve covers and all i can see is where the cam shafts push down on the little button to move the valve. What should i be looking for in terms of a damaged valve?? I guess my question is how do i diagnose a thrown valve?

thanks for the help. Hopefully its not a rod knocking. The noise gets pretty loud, the higher the rpm's the louder it gets.

check your clearences on your valve shims. per the tsrm. its prolly just out of spec which makes a bigger gap and a nice tick. OR you exhaust manifold is loose and your hearing the ticking from there..

or your lovely screen name did you in!

my point!

i had a ticking for a long ass time.. knew it was the valves but didnt want to tear into it yet. now im doing my rebuild and realized a shit load of the exhaust studs were loose.. so thats where the ticking is from, i hear from a lot of people

your talking about the exhaust manifold? whats a manifold stud? you mean bolt?

the exhaust manifold is held on by studs sticking out of the head with nuts holding the manifold on.

check your exhaust nuts/bolts/clamps/gaskets whatever.
and check your valve shim clearances according to the tsrm like ^^^^^he said. good luck

Bolt equals threads / head in one piece

Stud = just a threaded 'rod'
Nut goes over the stud for tightening

ok yeah thanks guys... I looked and didt see much. The studs were all good. the ticking sounded more like it was coming from a valve, is their anyway i can get a better view of the valves........

I thought i saw a picture around somewhere of someone that had lifted off the head with the black still sitting in the bay.

Anyone done it? Easy, Hard, Not possible?

Yes, people take the head off of the block all the time...lol...it is pretty involved though, and will take a while for a noob.

ummm...there are other ways of diagnosing your problem. I wouldn't just start taking the engine apart.

i'm pretty sure you're still a noob like me if you didn't know that you can pull the head without lifting the whole motor, it's all gravy though

well i've done it before on a 2.2L shelby turbo motor, but compared to the 7mgte its an rc car motor.

ahhh 2.2 turbo... thats what i had before i came to supra land! a nice 87 daytona shelby Z with T tops, leather.. all the goodies. boy i had fun in that car! until everything started to blow in it.. including the fuel pump which made me say FUCK YOU DODGE! lol. too much work for the state that the car was already in.

anywho. the supra is gonna be a little bit more complicated with the head but you shouldnt have too much a problem with a little help

the 7m's are heavy i think they are more then a V8 but there not that much i have a 2ton hoist and it pulls them out like a lose tooth.:biglaugh: i also have a 10ton hoist at my dads house that is a beast it picked up the front of my 74 duster like it was nothing.
