I thought I would revive this thread to see if anyone in the area had any interest in this. Shipping is rediculous so I'm sorry you guys back east are out of luck.

OK, if you havent seen my write up on this in my build thread here is the link to it: http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27913&page=1 Starting on about page 2 and continuing you can see the process of how I did it, and the final result. Keep in mind these will be modded stock steel hoods. If you're looking for weight savings go buy a CF or fiberglass hood. If you're like me and dont really care about shaving any weight off the car and just like the look of a modded hood, then this is an opportunity to get one custom made for you. For you lazy people here is a picture of what the hood looks like finished:

http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/Hood/hood4sale.jpg

My hood has a progressive lift, meaning the lift grows from 1.5" in the center to 2" at the back and has a cowl extention. I can also do a slightly less pronounced progressive lift of 1" center and 1.5" rear. (these measurements are in addition to the stock lift, not overall height, add roughly an inch for overall height dimensions) I have also experimented with an equal lift of 1.5" center and 1.5" rear (which mimics the stock hood but just with more of a cowl). I would also like to offer NACA ducts on the front center of the cowl and/or over the air filter location. I will also offer two choices for the cowl, a narrow cowl (like mine) or a wide cowl that will mimic the stock angle on the sides. Unfortunately, since I havent done a hood in each of these styles you will just have to use your imagination as to how they would look.

After modding the cowl, I will grind and/or fill the hood smooth and put a coat of primer/sealer on it so that its ready for your paint.

How much will this cost? Well, if you bring me your hood I will do a cowl lift for $200, and add a NACA duct for $75 more. If I have to supply a hood the price will vary depending on availability, but expect it add about $75 to the total. These will likely be available on a very limited basis, and I doubt anyone will want to pay for shipping, so I suppose it is only available to someone within driving distance. I prefer that you come pick the hood up from me, but Im sure I can arrange something if you cant.

Note: this is a "for sale" thread and not a discussion of whether or not you like the idea. If you dont like it dont post. Feel free to make comments in my build thread as Im open to discuss this, just not here! This thread is for serious buyers or questions regarding the modifications ONLY!

2 weeks at most depending on what other projects I have currently going. For a little bit more I would be willing to do a rush order and offer a turn around of 1 week.

Well, I will see what I can do about making this available to ship. I certainly dont mind trying to ship one. Im concerned about cost and of course making sure it doesnt get damaged in the process.

I think I have a line on a couple of hoods in the area that I can get started with. I'll let ya know.

Easy, put the spare hood on the car, drive to corvallis, drive home hoodless...lol

I think I know what you mean by cores now. Yea, actually Im gonna try to pick up a couple hoods to mod ahead of time, then someone can just come and swap out on the spot. Im working on it

as posted in my build thread by Rajunz:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y278/rajunz/hood1.jpg

that duct in the center is a version of a NACA duct. I can either put a duct in the center like that, or I have scoped out a good location for one behind the passenger headlight over the air filter area. There might be other spots for them, but I havent really had the chance to look all that closely.

Im trying to get ahold of a couple of hoods locally, I'll let ya guys know what I come up with on that and shipping costs...but wont be until the weekend as I am just slammed with other things right at the moment

shipping will be a royal pain. i work for UPS and havent seen many hoods come through. certainly none as heavy/big as the supra. youll have to go with a freight company most likely which is going to cost ALOT.

I have a white hood that has been sitting in my carport for like two years...lol...want it?

tekdeus
11-03-2006, 04:31 AM
Shipping will probably be $100. I've recently picked up large bulky body kit parts for $80-$100 shipping so the only issue will be weight, which is about 50 lbs for a Supra hood. Inconvenient, but not impossible. You may want to look into some wood frame/packing methods so they hoods don't get dented in transit.

Facime
11-03-2006, 11:51 AM
shipping isnt gonna happen. It exceeds the 165" limit to go UPS package and freight is just far too expensive.

Sorry gang, I would love to be able to ship one of these back east, but its not gonna be cost effective. So that leaves hand delivery. I am willing to drive a hood to you within say...6 hours of my location. Obviously I would have to charge some delivery charge, but we can work that out individually.

So let me know if I can make you one of these.

tekdeus
11-03-2006, 04:38 PM
That would get a good distance/range. Have each person drive a certain number of hours, meet in the middle and swap hoods. CF hoods are the same size. Do they ship via freight?

Turbo. Targa. Life.
11-03-2006, 04:55 PM
Uhh...why would shipping expense be a problem if the buyer paid for it? :dunno:

Facime
11-03-2006, 05:11 PM
Well if the buyer wanted one bad enough I dont have a problem with it other than the fact that it seems to me it would be cheaper to find a local fabricator and have it done. We are talking a quote of $526 door to door for UPS freight. Its just not feasable at that rate, since I dont see anyone agreeing to pay that for shipping.

I dont know about shipping a CF hood. Its not really the weight its the dimensions that are the problem. I bet I could ship 5 hoods for the same price of one. I guess with some kind of group buy and someone distributing on the other end it could work, but Im just not that motivated to make THAT happen.

For now, I'll keep this a local thing. If someone wants one bad enough to arrange their own shipping, I will crate one up for ya. Dimensions are (allowing for packaging and protection) 56" x 65" x 12" and the hood weighs 47 lbs.

Turbo. Targa. Life.

Dude I would totally be interested and according to Yahoo I'm only 7 hours away. It's a straight shot all the way on I-5 too haha.

Will the opening of the vent be covered by anything like mesh? Just a little protection from the rain would be good.

Facime
01-03-2007, 12:33 PM
on mine I left the back of the cowl open. I had intended to put mesh there or a vent that I could open or close. I havent done anything yet, so its open to the elements and I dont have a problem with rain. The overhang is enough to keep the water out. I could definately cover the opening in any way you want.

The run to and from Stockton isnt too bad depending on the condition of the pass.

Did you ever find out anything with the shipping and how people on EBAY are getting in at around $100 or so. Depending on shipping, I'd be interested.

On a different note about the hood, is the stock hood section under the new raised cowl removed or still still there under the new section.?

Facime
01-04-2007, 05:15 PM
I looked into shipping and have no idea how people are getting that rate to ship. I even asked a couple of ebayers how they planned to ship for that price, but got no responce. I would love to be able ship one of these but I just dont think I can.

so unless someone wants to arrange their own shipping, I AM NOT SHIPPING THESE - LOCAL PICKUP ONLY. Sorry, but thats the deal.

As for the cowl, in my build thread I show how I did this. The center section is raised up and the openings created on the sides are filled with sheet metal. Scoops are basically the same process.

Facime
01-21-2007, 12:28 PM
Still offering to do these.

I have two "locals" that are having their hoods modded. I will post up the results. I can possibly deliver a hood myself with prepayment of delivery costs. I would basically just need fuel and truck rental, but I could see doing 8 hours one way and making deliver cost in the $200? dollar range.

Facime
02-06-2007, 01:45 AM
OK, there are pictures floating around in other threads but I realized I forgot to post pics here. Granted neither of these hoods are actually finished but I think you can see what they will look like. I have 3 more Im doing after these then I can build some to take to TX.

I have an idea! Since I should be in Houston a little early for the event, at least one person could come get their own hood done right there on the spot. Maybe even 2 people...lol. It would still need paint, but I can crank out a hood in 2 days if I put my mind to it.

anyway, here are the pics of the 2 latest hoods:

nice hood you say your going to be in houston you gonna go thru dallas at all?? and how much for this hook you show here?

Facime
02-06-2007, 02:05 AM
The cowl lift (like the white hood) is $300. The cowl lift with a vent or scoop like the blue one would be $400. Variations of the scoops or vents are pretty much limitless. If it gets super complicated it might run a little more. It really depends on what someone wants.

I go through the trouble to move or modify the bracing underneath so that the hoods wont vibrate or flutter at speeds. If I do an intake duct I wil make a rain catch so you dont flood your intake. I also fill and block sand and prime so the hood is paint ready when you get it.

If you wanna do your own filler and primer you can save some cash that way. Im also open to trades for goods or services. Perfomance GTE parts preferred, but I may be open to non auto related items as well. (moving with next to nothing, and starting all over in Texas)

I was not planning on coming through Dallas, but it wouldnt be that hard to hand deliver one. However, Im hoping to mostly hit the big shows with product in hand. So that means TX, Chicago and PacNW (possibly)

ok as requested here are a couple of pics of the underside of a 1" cowl lift. Its the least complicated of the hoods, but it shows a little of what I do. I can assure you, when Im done the hood is stronger and more ridgid than it came from the factory.

http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/Hood/hoodbracin1.jpg

http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/Hood/hoodbracing2.jpg

After Im done with the body work on the skin I come back over the underside and clean up the welds and undercoat it, then usually paint the undercoating to match the hood color.

GOOD NEWS!!!

It looks like I can ship these afterall for a fairly reasonable price. I was making the mistake of using my typical supply lines for getting shipping estimates. I found a new way to book freight shipments and its really quite reasonable. I used an address that I knew in Florida (about as far as can be from me) and was quoted from $150-$200. The only real catch is that it needs come from and go to a commercial location that has a forklift or loading dock.

So, Im going to pursue this a little more and see if I can find a location here in town that I can ship from.

I may wait until I get to TX first before I really start trying to offering these shipped. I just have an aweful lot on my plate right now.

ALSO:
I have some new pics of a completed hood. This is KevinM's hood with a 1" overall lift. I closed up the back of this one and put some mesh in the vent. It came out real nice. Kevin said he would post up some pics when its painted and on his car. Here are my pics from today.

Got any pics of the finished underside? Awesome work. I'm really curious as to the underside of the blue vented one as to how you're routing everything.

Sorry for some reason I never saw this post.

To be 100% honest Im kinda hesitant to post a whole bunch of pics about my processes and how Im finishing them out. Its not that they are in some way top secret but since I am trying to sell them, my thoughts are that anyone wanting to reproduce these themselves are going to have to go through the same learning process as I have.

Im sure Tim could chime in here on his blue hood and post pics of the underside, he paid for it he can do what he wants. Im also confident that he would confirm that fact that his under-structure is quite solid. The weakest section of his hood is the opening itself. In the middle there is a weak spot. We both agreed that a grill of some description would cure the problem. Im hoping Tim gets his hood finished off and painted soon so we can post more pics of it in that state.

I dont want to sound like a dick here, its just that alot of people are asking way too many questions on my process to make me believe that they are just planning on doing one themselves or having someone local do them. While there is nothing I can do about that, I also dont want to be all that helpful to them.

So, with a smile on my face and a little chuckle is say..."if you want to see the how Im doing it all, buy one!" :naughty:

i know you stopped the wings, but have you stopped this as well? im wondering on a price for a top secret vented style, like the one that tanya photoshopped. i realize you dont want to ship, but i will pay all expenses associated if you open this option.

the hood design is here

ps, why dont you check with shine to see how they ship their hoods so cheap?

Sorry I didnt reply to this earlier. Im kind of all consumed with getting my motor in my car.

Once I have completed my current obligations, I dont know if I will be doing any fabricating for a while. Things are just way too scattered right now to even think about it. In fact Im pretty sure I need to sell my welder just to get back to Oregon. On a positive note, but not to spill the beans entirely, there is a good chance you may be seeing a CF or FG version of one of my hoods sometime this year. Still lots to work out to make that happen, but its being looked at.

On a....whim I typed stuff I had no idea I was typing...please ignore the angry rodent!

Thats one of those trick answers like "is this the first time you've been pregnant?"

I mean, if he was actually insulting Tanya's photoshop...I fear more for him than if he insulted my work...LOL

If it does happen, I would definitely get one exactly like the blue one. That hood looks incredible! That hood in CF would kick ass...functional and lightweight. Nice work, man.
