egr cooler

hey guys, do any of you have a pic of the egr cooler for the 7mgte???
i kinda have a leak in that area and ive replaced both hoses already
also, how many and what size are the bolts that connect it to the cylinder head?

i may try to pry the egr cooler and replace the gasket since that could be the part thats leaking.... thanks in advance

I believe it's 8-10 bolts... 10 mm... pretty long actually.

Would be a real pita (if even possible) to do with the engine in the car. :icon_conf But nmaybe I'm just a wuss.


Both hoses on the EGR cooler? It bolts to the back of the head and theres only one "hose" (a metal line) going up to the intake... ? But I got an EGR cooler gasket if you want to save some $$ (PM me). Just cover shipping from 47283. :icon_bigg

you could do it with the engine in, i forgot to pu tit on my head and later saw it on my table...i was @@%# but i manged to weezle my hands and a wrench back there, was not fun though

I would invest in a set of ratchet wrenches with the little socket insert things, may not want to take them all the way out w/ them, but would work hella good for tightening them back down and breaking them loose.

Are you talking coolant leak?? cause there is no coolant for the egr cooler. only air.

If you are talking exhaust gas leak at the cooler, you can remove the cooler cover and then clean everything, then just reseal with FIPG. There's just not much pressure in the cooler to worry about "blowing" a leak.

here's the thing, i replaced the 90 degree side hose on the egr cooler ( the one thats connected to that metal piping that leads to the side of the engine
but upon installation, i couldnt put the clip retainer back on there since i dont have a special tool or whatever and its just too cramped.
i tied it with a zip tie as a first aid and its not leaking. i put my hand behind the cooler and there were traces of coolant i think i have a slow leak on that side

someone told me that i should just deal with that when i do a head gasket change or when the tranny is off... but then again i have to refill the reservoir 1 every 3 weeks???

Coolant leaking from that 90 degree rubber elbow on the exhaust side of the engine?

One makes sense, and the other one doesn't.

Coolant in the EGR is a HUGE "wtf?" for me, the leaking elbow is an easy fix. No special tools, no special talents... Needle nose pliers *Long bent ones if you have a set, if not I would highly recommend one* and just grab onto it, squeeze, and slide it up over the hose on the metal line.

Leaving that leaking is a bad idea, IMO. Eventually the car will get hot, you'll be boosting, that hose will blow off, you'll either catch your car on fire or you'll overheat the engine and get RK or BHG or something, that a LOT to risk for not doing a quick 5-15 min job...

Get some pics of exactly what you're talking about, because I'm pretty confused ATM.

hey man i think you are mistaking what the EGR cooler does... Its not the egr cooler leaking coolant its the bypass hose there or a crack in the metal coolant hose. That hose you are talking about goes into the head.

The egr cooler is there to direct exhaust from the #6 cylinder through that metal cooler to cool it a little bit, back into the block then to the EGR valve.

The EGR is exhaust gas recirculation meaning at certain loads and throttle positions (cruise mostly), Exhaust gases pass into the intake manifold to lower combustion chamber temperatures. There is no coolant in the egr cooler. Hope this is understandable for ya haha... theres my rant on EGR

...noob.. i just explained why hes wrong about where the leak is coming from. Its not the egr cooler... why resurrect a dead thread that was ended with good logic.
