View Full Version : Vantucky, WA turbo build.
Well, I figured I am at a solid point to start with a progress build. I'm new here on this name, my brother goes by Pimptrizkit on sf and sm. We have been to a few meets in his red mk3.
Any ways. Where I am at. I might as well start from the beginning, the joy, the horror. I started off buying a pearl white 88' turbo mk3 from a college kid on SF in oregon. I was buying the car as "runs, rod knock".. I figured since my brother is fairly experienced with these motors and I am very interested in supras, and ALWAYS have been. I brought him into the Supra world with my growing interest in Mk4's. So. Low bugdet comes to mind with us mk3 guys, okay.. most of us. So i got this guy to sell me the car for 1200.. good deal eh? well, things went a little screwy here and there.. He wanted 1500 now.. parts were missing (int. peices).. So we got him down to 1400 and loaded it up on the trailor.. managing to take out both the front bumper, and my ebay down pipe. No biggie. I have a money tree in my basement.
So, we bring this thing home.. it was a beauty in my eyes.. I was in love. I bragged to my friends, to my parents, to my brother.. to every one! Who wouldn't!??! This is my first car! So.. The good! We found receipts in the car for a few things. Looks like this was just a frustrated owner! Well, so let me begin with the papers i found. Looks like the first one was a blown head gasket, who hasnt had one of those? haha. Well, this guy did it right atleast. He sent his head in to a toyota dealer and they cracked it.. So he found another one. It was bead blasted and completely gone through, surfaced, and a 2MM HKS mhg installed. We also found receipts for his A/C, clutch, vacume problems, sensor problems, etc. So, theres a lot of new parts in the engine area. I added up the receipts to find close to $3,000 in parts and labor within the last 2 years! Dang! I would be mad too.
Now for the teardown. Me and Jim started out by pulling the motor and trans (5speed) and getting the motor up on the stand for disassembly. We found some GOOD things doing this! One was I have a stage 2 6 puck clutch, and an Aluminum flywheel! Woohoo! Thing is LIGHT! Any ways. After a few grewling days of pulling parts and getting the motor apart we found some BAD! One was, two rod bearings were spun, which ruined the crank (the crank pulley key was also sheared and ruined the end of the crank shaft). So.. We pulled apart Pimptrizkits (Jim's) spare N/A motor and took 4 rods and a crank from it to give to the machinist. After his inspection he found out my block needed to be bored .020 over so we were stumped again.. Should I spend 400 more for OEM pistons? or go cheap.. shit.. I dont know.. well, i drive like a fking grandma so I figured these would get me buy for the next year until I pull it apart again. My machinist also swore by these pistons and since he's done good work before.. we said okay. So we slid by using ROCK pistons and some chromoly rings, boring it .020 over, machining the crank, hot tank, installing all new freeze plugs, all new clevite 77 bearings and such. We also had the flywheel/pressureplate/etc all fully balanced with the motor.
So after about a month wait I get my motor a few days ago. Sweet! While I was at work my bro got it out of the truck and put it on the stand, and bought me some stuff I will need, including new belts, oil for the trans and motor, new filter, thermostat, waterpump, etc. What a loving bro huh?! I think so. Oh, he also added some paint for my block and oil pan. So.. what color.. hrmm.. something bright, yet.. not too overwelming. Something that matches.. if any of you have seen my car, its pearl white.. ya.. we had to go white. So, I got off work and he was gone at work, I masked up the motor and proceded to paint several coats of high temp white paint on my block, My brother painted my oil pan gloss black. Looks nice. So here we are now. 9/14/06. We got the right oil pump in it, the oil pan on it, and the front cover going on it. I will upload pictures ASAP after work tommorrow and this weekend with more progress on my motor.
P.S. Incase you all wonder what my car looks like. Here's a sneak peak.

Hey Joe, you might remember me. You guys came to my house when you had that thing on the trailer, and I also saw ya at Keith's house up in Portland. Im glad to see your making some progress and it sounds like your taking your time and getting it done in good fasion.
I still have that front bumper if you need it, and I would like to get rid of it. LMK if ya still need one.
Glad to see another Supra added to the family. 'grats
Okay so we did a little bit today so I feel I should update this and give every one a little heads up on how things are going.
First off I have no clue what I am doing myself so I sat cleaning parts and painting them or wire brushing them clean. I felt a little better inside knowing atleast I can do bitch work so I have some meaning in life.
Onwards! We started out by prepping the block by me taping it off and painting it with White, adding a few coats until we felt it was durable enough. As you can see in this picture, the block surface was shaved by the machinist, and just small parts added.
http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/9993/p9140026xw3.jpg
For any of you MK3 owners, I'm not sure if you are like us. But we like to work messy.. Greasy, cant find crap and crap laying every where. We dont label parts, bolts, peices.. whatever.. Its every where. I can prove it to you!
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/5185/p9160006cg7.jpg
More...
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/5964/p9160007sc7.jpg
Last one of the mess!!
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/6180/p9160010pp0.jpg
So! we finnally started getting somewhere.. We started off by wiping the mhg surface clean with some break cleaner, and then wiping the head down, aswell as the mhg itself.
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/7703/p9160002sx9.jpg
We proceded to install the head, torque the ARP bolts from 25 ft lbs, to 50 ftlbs then to 90 ftlbs. Got the timing belt on, installed the new water pump.
http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/5258/p9160019xt3.jpg
Now, i'm not too sure if many of you will know what this is, I wasn't too sure! Now we figured it out... its JDM TYTE YO!!!
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/7806/p9160018ol9.jpg
Next off, we got the new thermostat in, the crank pulley (not trq'd yet)..
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/3121/p9160022jy2.jpg
From here, we prefilled the new oil filter with half qt. of oil and then put on the new exh. manifold gasket and put the manifold on. Every thing was going so smoothly until here.. I wish it wasn't so.. but I have to show it.
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7140/p9160024xn7.jpg
Yes.. What you're seeing is what you think it is. This wasn't our mistake.. it was probably an earlier owner but I am not blaming him.. but merely an old motor taking its abuse.
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/9210/p9160025gc9.jpg
Yes.. Thats a stud with aluminum threads on it. We were barley applying any pressure on the nuts and the stud started pulling out. We proceded to pull out some of the other studs and noticed 1-2 more were starting to do the same. So, our day is over. We will pick up more tommorrow because we have to go buy some heli coils from napa or something and have my neighbor give us a hand on installing them into the head. By monday we are looking to have the motor dropped into the car and start pluming it for electrical and water. But, to make every one happy I took another picture before it started to rain and we closed things up. May this bring a little happiness to a gloom day.

looking good man.... yeah, i think almost everyone who has pulled the stock manifold off has had to heli-coil it.
Yeah, we figured we would have to heli coil it but just hoped we didnt. The person doing all the work in the pictures is my brother Pimptrizkit for any one that recognizes him. I grabbed the camera every 10 minutes to update things.
Any ways, about the heli coil. I believe we are just going to do all of them, but what I am asking is does it matter what kind we get? I was just planning to head down to Napa auto parts and pick up a heli coil for an aluminum head for a 12mm stud?

I used rock pistons as well in my rebuild. They seemed to last alright until the rings took a shit.

any one think the exhaust studs were in backwards? i noticed the threads go deep into the head, yet the studs went only half way or less into the holes.. i was thinking this could be a possible cause of the threads being pulled from the motor aswell.

aww come on!.. how hard did you run her while breakin her in?
how many miles before the rings gave?
yo joe we runnin the rock rings? or another companies?
yeah i have been hard at work, putting this sucka together. i had the feeling she was just going together way to smooth! lol
when i had my head apart, and rebuilt, i didn't come across an issue with the exhaust studs. but now that this has happened, i think i will cheerish the other 2 heads we have ,well one, i guess one's cracked, and the other is warped, so we don really have an extra head, guess i need to buy a dremil and learn to port these suckers!
well stayed tuned, these bro's will be tuned!

I ran it very easy. Dino oil change at 5 minutes, 5 miles, 50 miles, 200 miles, 500 miles, and full synthetic starting at 1000 miles.
Lasted a total of 13K miles.
They weren't rock rings though, they were hastings rings. The pistons seemed alright.

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that to seat the rings properly they need to wear the cylinders a little during their first 500 or so miles. Isnt it counter-productive to change the oil that often during the break-in period?

To my knowledge it's not counter productive to change the oil that often. I do know you should not be using synthetic to break in an engine.
I would venture to argue that the procedure is fine since I had 182 compression across the board for almost 2 years. :)

im going to run delo 400 oil in the motor, and i had origonaly planned to change @ 500, 1000, 2000, 3500, then change the oil every 2-3k miles after that.
how much boost where you runnin?
spipedong

10 pounds.
It wasn't really a normal use situation that failed the rings either. I had a friend driving the car and the ignitor went out on cylinders 3&4. He kept driving around town etc. and fuel wash took its toll on the cylinder bores. I have no doubt the engine would have kept running tens of thousands more miles if not for that.
^^ that makes me feel a little bit better. Any ways, so today we went to the auto parts store and bought 7/16x14 heli coil kit.. Im glad it only comes with 6.. so we had to buy a pack of heli coils which was another 10 bucks. We also got copper anti-seize, red RTV, 29/64 drill bit, some metal lock nuts, and (3) 7/16x2.50 studs with half course, half fine threads. No one in town had 4 more... so we have to order them, looks like they will get here tommorrow.

Whats this I hear bout the red suppie blowing the mhg?? The white ones looking good mang. I still kinda regret letting you guys take that but glad to see its getting back in shape... Didn't it have a defcon dp and blitz nur spec? I thought I remember thinking those were pretty valuable parts. Anyways Hopefully all these nw supies will be running again soon. latez Ben

well ben it had a blitz nur spec, but also had an ebay, 2.5inch to 3inch dp, but the enkies were a plus. :biglaugh:
i dont think i blew the mhg but didn't prep the block properly...
Okay.. here we go again!
It's been a few days, I am sorry. I just enrolled and started in college, and im also working.. and homework, and blah blah blah.. enough of my excuses! So here we go.
I haven't had time to even touch my motor since I have posted the previous pictures, my brother has done all of this and I've only had time to take the pictures I have. It looks like we are almost done!
http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/1786/p9200001fl9.jpg
Here is a picture of my dirty turbo.. Yes, the rest of the motor looks "blah".. Thats what you get for doing things within a couple days without really caring what it looks like and lack of money to care. The turbo does have a little shaft play.. but, in reality...What can we do.. It's not enough to make me go N/A for the time being so I rather just deal with it and go easy on it until whatever happens. You can also see my white paint getting dirty already :(
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/7171/p9200002vo4.jpg
I'm not even going to bother posting a picture of the right side of the motor.. What for?? Wiring harness and intake manifold.. wooo, every one has seen those before.. So i can skip that, and continue to the next.
http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/7579/p9200005qi8.jpg
Okay.. the hassel! As you can see.. yes, thats a turbo exhaust manifold.. blah blah blah. But with blood, sweat, and money into it! May not look like it, but we had to replace all of the studs and heli coil them. Sorry I didn't get pictures.. meh?... stone me later. So, we took some advice from another post on here and upgraded to a 7/16x14 heli coil kit. Course on one side, fine on the other for the studs... Too bad they only had 3 instock and had to order the others... My bro and dad drilled out the holes with a 29/64" drill bit, tapped it for the heli coil size, put the heli coils in.. blah blah.. whatever. Now we should have the motor and trans installed by the weekend.. hopefully =X

well i went through the harness today, and replaced 4 injector clips, and i am going to solder on a new pigtal for a water temp sensor, and also solder a new pig tale for the cps connecot, while examing it , a wire broke right off, no start any one? lol
looks like im buying heat shrink tomorrow, and gona have to locate my soldering iron.
Okay.. More pics!! Learned a bit more tonight!! Okay so...
I am buying my brothers downpipe and turbo elbow.. so.. since his car is down, off the parts go!!!
http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/1289/p9210001gj3.jpg
Okay... Next off.. hopefully you guys know what this means... AFM ANY ONE??
http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/8954/p9210018mh6.jpg
Last off... I was wondering if any one knows what pressure plate this is.. I don't think its OEM
http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/970/p9210021pn3.jpg
and.. the last picture, is my flywheel.. aluminum, it's been balanced and such.. yeapp...
http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/7199/p9210022sb9.jpg
Other than that.. quite a bit of connectors broke, injector clips, etc... the pictures are sort of blurry so I decided not to post them.. whatever... good night.
Well, today we spent our time just cleaning parts.. painting parts.. pretty much lol. Jim had soldered all the connections on my harness and replacing all the broken clips on it, I spent about 6 hours hand cleaning my transmission to be painted. I then power washed it, aswell as the engine moints, and intercooler pipes for repainting. We decided to go gloss black on the intercooler pipes, aswell as the crank pulley, but went Chevrolet orange (way bright) on the entire transmission, and motor mounts. Things came out okay. I didn't sand down the intercooler pipes and I just cleaned them with brake cleaner and then sprayed over the old paint.. worked okay I would say, though there are some uneven spots where you could see the old paint flaked away and left an low spot. I'm not too bothered about it. The transmission came out great. It was packed with what looked like 20 years of grease and dirt, and had about 1/8" thick of dried grease covering the entire thing. More on the inside of the bellhousing!
We also picked up electrical tape, wireloom, and shrink wrap to finish off the wiring harness. I hope it doesn't throw any codes!
So, if any one hasn't noticed yet.. or for someone that hasn't seen my brothers car in person or in pictures, things look familiar. We decided since his block needs to be gone through for safe measures.. all new bearings and such, that there is no reason why we shouldn't upgrade my car. So we are putting his intercooler, 2.5" hard pipes, Turbo (mine has lots of cracks on exhaust side), Maft Pro, and downpipe and turbo elbow into my car! We figured, my downpipe is crap.. 2.5" to 3", and i have a stock elbow.. So he told me I could buy his for like 100 bucks.. whatever, add it to my bill.
The maft pro is being installed in my car for a few reasons. I need one. And secondly because we might as well wire it up and get it tuned right so when his car is back up, i can buy my own maft pro and just plug and play and transfer the tune from the laptop. Sounds easy enough. He's upgrading his intercooler to something larger in the future, so I think im buying that from him.. and the hardpipes? Well.. we will be buying more 2.5" pipe and bends and make another set at my neighbors house, since he paid quite a bit for this set to be hand made.
We are a little delayed on getting the motor in the car, just because of random stuff comming up. Finding parts, cleaning parts, buying supplies, etc... Also, the only free time I have is after work and college.. which I usually have homework, and weekends... So things are hard right now, but I think it will be worth it in the end. Pictures to follow tommorrow most likely if I have time.

09-25-2006, 07:43 AM
eh, atleast you have been using your free time correct joe.. i ran into the problem i was workin so much i ran out of time for home work
any ways, i'm pulling the head back off and going to use coper spray on the head gasket and also clean the head gasket between all of the layers to make sure i get the best seal as posible.
well off to college for me!
A small update. I bought a new *used* turbo from someone on the boards here at SM and hopefully i will get that monday. Mine was cracked on the exhaust housing pretty badly so we figured for $120 I could just add it on my total.
Jim has been wire looming every thing and using black electrical tape, things are comming together real clean imo. Electrical is pretty much done. Next.. if any one noticed we are using N/A valve covers without the mounting studs for the coil packs, so we are mounting the coil packs under the intake by welding it on the support. I just purchased (4) #6 wires from another member on SM to go with our two so every thing can reach fine. I would of upgraded to new wires completely, but we wanted to retain the stock style plug that fits into the head to keep water out.
I have to go dig threw some boxes to find my clutch fork before we can put the two components together and put it in the car. (perhaps tommorrow?.. Not sure, I have school.. and work :aigo: )

well a little bit of progress today, i got the motor off the stand, and drove in the new pilot bearing, torqed the fly wheel on, that sucker is light!
some how in our mess, we lost his clutch fork, sadly before i ran out of money last year, i had bought all the 5speed parts to swap my auto. so right as now, he's using my tranny wing and my clutch fork, there's still hope to find his fork so i dont have to repurchase. but i broke his tranny wing doing some thing stupid so he got mine out of the deal.. .
i took a few teaser pics. but it's really sad how messy it all looks with the harness on there and resting on top.
i got all the clutch bolts in, but not tight yet, and i am still missin one of the tranny to block bolts, along with not being able to find the inspection plate that covers the back of the fly wheel from road hazards and water.
so far i have made good progess, and would be faster but findin bolts can suck some times. i do know that next time i do this, i will buy a box of sandwich bags and start labling, im doing this at school and i know my motor will come back together very quickly knowin where all the bolts are..

this pic is the reason it is not in the car at the moment...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/pimptrizkit/P9280018.jpg
i went ahead and pulled the manifold back of to make sure my mani to head bolts were tight, the upper was only lose tho, i have been fixin broken clips, solderd a new pigtail on for a knock sensor, and tapped up the harness some, the red conduiet stuff is being removed, looks ugly and doesn't match a lick of the color skeem of the car..
any ways, here's some more..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/pimptrizkit/P9280006.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/pimptrizkit/P9280003.jpg
forgot to mention, i also picked up a new pcv hose while i was at toyota gettin the pilot bearing.
Well, I haven't uploaded the new pictures we have taken, but!! I can tell the story right?!
We got the motor dropped in, only took about 20 minutes?.. We just did a straight drop in with the transmission. We started looking at how we are going to mount our plug wires and such (we are relocating the coil packs underneath the intake mani. like BigAaron *thanks! for the idea*) We bought a bunch of #6 plug wires since they were the longest and hoped they would work, but no luck.. they don't reach!.. So we have to make custom plugs.. We are disasembling the toyota plugs and putting new wire in that is longer and all the same length (24") maybe? Then we will glue the ends on them so we will have extended wires with original toyota ends on them with locks!
We received the turbo, but upon close inspection the turbo we received had two cracks under the wastegate flap.. What can we do.. I dont have time or money to return this turbo, so we figure it's better than what the old turbo looked like and we put it on. If the oil seals are toast I will go bezerk for sure. Right now I am driving 40 miles a day in a diesel truck making 10 mpg! Yeah.. HALF tank a day just to school and back! ahaha, it's rediculous..
So I will post pictures this weekend with a little better explanation of what we are trying to accomplish. It's almost done though! It should be running by Oct. 14th for the Supraburger cruise hopefully!!

you jacked the bros maf system too?? dang the red is looseing its heart of performane huh? Where you guys go for machine work? Im trying to get some headwork done right now so I can get mine back together. Odd color combo with the hugger and white. I been trying to put bolts back in the holes they came out of with some stragglers so hopefully I dont run into that problem. gl getting it finished it up
I decided for now, to just go completely stock based. Stock intercooler, stock intercooler pipes, stock MAF. The only thing that will change is the filter really. We will dyno it to get a base number and make sure my motor doesn't throw any codes. Then I will buy the MAFT and tune and redyno, then upgrade my intercooler and pipes and tune/dyno again to see the progress and benefits of the performance parts.
Okay another update... got every thing pretty much bolted together.. Jim started it up today for the first time and said it sounded good. Though, we have a problem. The turbo I bought off of the forum which was supposed to be in "good" condition had two cracks under the wastegate. I mentioned this to the seller. Upon starting there was instantly black smoke. I wasn't there, but my brother said the turbo is smoking and has bad oil seals. He said he ran it for 10 minutes or so and from startup to shut off it was smoking.
Now, the motor is brand new on the bottom end, and the top end, so I am a little upset that I was sold a turbo that the seller knew nothing about but said he did. (told it had good oil seals and wasn't cracked)... I won't mention the sellers name until things have been solved.

wow.
hold on, lets fix a couple boo boo's..
i started it up, and she still has to many vac leaks to stay running. pcv aren't hooked to the vavle covers..
but we craqcked the throttle, and managed to get her to idle around 600-1200 rpm (throttle dependent) we dont have the linkage hooked up due to a throttle cable length not long enough while using the n/a valve cover..
any ways, while we were listin to the motor purr for the first time, i was watching, the smoke rise off the exhaust manifold, while the temps were starting to come up, at this point we have only been running solid for about 1 minute.
at this point i looked at my dad since i was smelling oil burning. and saw a nice size cloud coming out of the back of the car...
im going to fiddle around with it again tomorrow..
but before any one says any thing, i am using the down pipe off my car that hass NO oil in it, my car ran great. also using my elbow...
any wAYS CHOW!

good news Bad news..
well checked for codes, foun 51, looked it up, and found either tps or a switch, well i realized the ac was on
fixed that, then rechecked and found 11, realized i didn't leave the fuse out lng enough..
3rd time the charm! NO codes!
so im happily working along, tightenin the started, and crack.... i took out the rear knock sensor! dopE!
any ways, made some progress on coil pack relocation, and also on deletion of the throttle linkage..
joe will post some pics soon enough.
Okay so here's an update!!! Things have been comming along slowely I suppose, atleast its almost there right? So the pictures I will be showing you today is where the motor is at now, explaining what left needs to be done, full view of our mess.. or our beauty? whatever you want it to be.. And LAST of all, Detailed pictures on how to get RID of your Tripod/Cruise control and have a Direct throttle to throttle body connection that WORKS.
These are high res. pictures scaled down to 640 so be happy.. They were 3265x whatever =P
Okay, so any ways.. Here's the current status of the motor. It's in, it's bolted down in there and every thing, coil packs are mounted below the intake manifold (sorry.. pics are on the other digital camera).. Radiator is in aswell as the turbo and every thing like that.. What needs to be done now is replace a broken knock sensor, install intake manifold and upper IC pipes, ground some connections and fix a broken wire. the car isn't throwing any codes like jim said, so thats good.. Looks like I have a good platform to work with!
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/4025/motordw0.jpg
Next off is a full shot, yepp.. that's a full shot if you're blind. Just kidding! Here's what the car has looked like infront of our messy house for the last unno weeks! Like my discontinued rims huh? :icon_bigg

Just because this picture turned out cool looking, here's my interior. I know, brown seats, blue accent peices, black dash!? Doesn't fit! I KNOW! lol, thats how I bought the car.. I don't care!

Okay, last of all for now *until I can upload more pictures or take more*... Here's a step by step of the throttle connection. Btw, you need turbo throttle body linkages, and an N/A throttle cable and some knowledge of how to use a grinder, a drill, and maybe some pliers.
(1) First off, we start with a stock stopper peice from the throttle body. This peice is used JUST for the stopper and springs so the throttle closes and opens perfect and will not throw codes for over opening. The red line is where the peice was cut in later pictures for clearance issues.
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/7711/1tm2.jpg
(2) Next, this peice i BELIEVE came off of a turbo, DONT quote me! I didn't see where jim pulled it off before he cut into it. But, any ways.. This peice is where the throttle cable will attach to, it has been cut as you can see. (used a grinder..)
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/5483/2on7.jpg
(3) Here is peice number one and two put together.. showing how we fit them.
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/6985/3oo7.jpg
(4) Fourth, here is part number 1 mounted on the throttle body before it was cut for mounting purposes. We took pictures as we were figuring out how to get it to work.
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/2640/4vp3.jpg
(5) Fifth, Part number one mounted still but with the two stock springs hooked up.
http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/3384/5wv4.jpg
(6) Sixth, this shows part one and two mounted on the throttle body with the springs attached.
http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/3964/6sw7.jpg
(7) Seventh, this is all the peices mounted to the throttle body, after part one was cut for clearance issues. You can see in the picture we bent a peice of metal and cut some holes in it to hold the cable in a stationary position. Don't worry! We will be making a new peice that is longer and places the cable straight with the guide so there isn't any problems, this was purely mock up!
http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/8199/7eb4.jpg
(8) Eighth, this is just a different view of picture 7. Showing the cut part number 1.
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/7725/8us8.jpg
(9) Last of all! Another view of the mock up with all of the springs attached.

Hope you all enjoyed reading this, if someone wants to take the initiative to post a "how to do it" for this throttle linkage go ahead you can use my pictures and information, but give me credit for doing this writeup in your thread :icon_bigg

the part i used was a jdm turbo, auto, throttle blade spinner thing.. it had came on my jdm turbo motor and i swaped it for an non turbo cam lober thing while tring to get the linkage to work.
you will need, an non turbo throttle cable (maybe auto) because it's longer then the stock turbo cable, and allows for better positioning,.im sure you can make a turbo one fit but will the cable wear out?
i had seen this done once before using just the jdm throttle lobe, and i didn't notice any thing sayin it over turned the butterfly.
but when i assembled it, i saw what part i needed to cut off, and i also noticed it turned the butterfly to about 110* where it only needed to achive 90* at wot.. of course this would hinder performance, by closing the thottle some, and also would push the tps possibly past acceptible ranges. thuse throughin a code.. (in my mind atleast..)
even with out making the bracket and cuttin the origonal turbo peice. when mocked up and the mani was on, we had perfect throttle operation,
the reason for the bracket was to extend cable life. cleaner look , and being able to take the slack out of the gas pedle.
any ways, this is a mod i will definitly be doing on my car when she's back up and running ! along with the coil pack relocation , these 2 mod's definitly clean up the engine bay !

Car is coming together VERY nicely Joe!! Keep up the good work!!
Car is coming together VERY nicely Joe!! Keep up the good work!!
IT STARTED!! WOOHOOO!! We have one vacuum leak under the intake manifold, and a water leak on the turbo because of an old seal. It PURRS!!! Rev's to 2k INSTANTLY, literally no wait or hesistation, my bro revved it in the car and said guess the RPM and i thought he was at 1 grand. I drove his car for 4-5 weeks and it was NO where near as smooth in power.
IM SO HAPPY! Should be driving it within the next few days.

yeah that vaccume leak he speaks of is the vac line to the bov, i couldn't find the stock metal line that connects with 2 rubber hoses so i got creative, but im having a hard time hooking it up.
it's a little hard to start because of the leak, but nothing like my supra, w/ a temp sensor code.
if the isc worked faster it wouldn't start bad at all. but i coved the vac leak, she purrs right at 700 rps or so, no codes. check engine light does flash when she's about to die but doesn't stay lit while running !
i did manage to shock my self while covering the vacum leak while letting the car do a heat cycle today. i snapped a couple cell phone shots.. so dont hate to hard.. i guess these will be a sneak peak before we can get some good quality shots in :biglaugh:
any ways, here's a pic of the n/a valve covers, some custom wires i did up. and decided to pull the fan shroud off since it was broke.. need's to be replaced!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/pimptrizkit/16-10-06_2105.jpg
also good news is his small ac fan works when temp is coming up, and the larger one infront of the norm fan comes on at operating temp. also the car has 40psi cold start, and has 20psi warm idle.

What's missing? PCV hoses!!

opps! lol i tell you , new motors have some blow by!
im jsut really glad the turbo we picked up recently was in decent shape, it's the 3rd turbo the motor has had and not driving any miles on.. any ways,
i plan on soldering up a nice stock looking set of pvc pipes out of stock assorted parts i have..
if not, maybe a catch can and some clean fittings..
and i know the nuts on the 3k pipe are missin too!
Turbo. Targa. Life.

Not PVC, PCV--positive crankcase ventilation. The 2 little nipples sticking up out of the valve covers...if you're soldering those then...well I dunno
pimptrizkit
10-17-2006, 01:19 AM
ahh dang typo's,
yeah i know what there for.
i didn't plan on soldering the nipples, it would make it nerealy impossible ot reove the valve covers..
i would be makine my own piping that looked sotck buck worked with the system..
Dang, well.. While I was at school Jim put 15 miles on the car. When it's idling now he said it seems like its missing on a cylinder. Not sure if it's the plug wires, or a vacuum leak. It's also leaking a tiny bit of oil, though we believe that is the gasket on the turbo line.
I went out there tonight to take some pics of it and WOW.. this thing is LOW!! I didn't remember it being so low to the ground!

Sorry for the pictures, it is pitch black outside. I know my front bumper is cracked.. Thats from it being too low!.. Also, theres a lot of oil and grease on the front bumper from us :aigo:

CLEAN THAT SHIT UP MANG!!!!
:D
Looks good!!! Glad to hear that it's running again, and hopefully you'll find out why it's missing on that cylinder :D

i think it's missin on a pair.. and runnin on four at idle, but runs fine off idle,
possible a vacume hose could be a culprite?
i figured if i pull each plug and look for what apears to be the dead cylinder then figure it out from there.. compression test.... then check if that cylinder is achive high/low rpm spark..
any ways, im going to see if the oil drain line can be tightened tomorrow on the lift, and also inspect the alignment of the car since i had some rear end parts off..

I wish I had a brother like you :-P
Get over here and do my car!!
What can I say? He found the vacuum problem and now it idles perfect. Oil line was tightened today but I think im still leaking a tiny bit of water. Power steering hose is leaking aswell.
Btw TTL, he gets to drive MY car and put the first 500-1000 miles on it.. So... I think its a fair trade off since im driving a beater for the next month or two.

yeah PImP does a good job at what he does on cars. ive had him help me on a couple things including replacing my clutch. what i like about him is he always makes it work! :) ima get him drunk and lock him in the garage with my car and make him rebuild my engine. lol

beer? :biglaugh:
any ways, yeah i decided to show my shop partner the car after class this smorning, and i poped the hood and show him, and for what ever reason i told him you know i think i have the egr on wrong, let me yank this tube, and connect this one.. bigo~
car started and idled like a Champ!
car now has 100 miles on it! plans for tomorrow is to fix this drip that i have, even if it means the turbo is coming back off..

that throttle cable is not long for this world!
Having it pull on the angle is bad, having it pull on the edge of the cam is worse! pm me ill send you a pic of the JDM throttle body once my motor is back together!

yeah i know it's not the smoothest. but had to get a throttle some how, and using the stock stuff with the n/a valve covers wasn't going to work.
im going to be making a new bracket soon that will put the cable right below the cam and fix the angle it pulls from.
any ways, 130 miles..

10-25-2006, 04:18 PM
well im just about to hit 600 miles, once my brother buys the oil she's getting a oil change.
car seems to have good power, rev' pretty quick, andhooks up decent..
down side the heated springs i belive are causing some decent wheel hop.
and the clutch is chattering a bit. i have gotten used to it to the point i can drive with out and and hardly tell, but my brother has yet get ahang of it with out killing the car or burning out..
~edit;
just did a leak down test and just quickly did it at the end of class when people where leaving. did it on one and six since their the easiest ones to do , and they both read less then 5% loss.
i figure it will be that way across the board, but will check latter this month across all of them.

Small update for those who care :icon_razz
Got the maft pro in, we arent 100% if it works yet.. Should see today as Pimptrizkit is installing it for me while I am at work. Also got a new IAT sensor thanks to dr jonez!
I'm still waiting to hear back from Sethron about the FFIM. I gave him $150 to start it, and he should be done next week! I will update the pics today of my car as the engine pics are a little outdated here. I'm at work though, so no pictures yet till after 5
