View Full Version : Racing my boss

I'm just curious. I'm new to the supra community. I just bought my '87 N/A 5spd about three weeks ago. It is entirely stock, for now. My problem is that I might have let my mouth over load what my car can do. I basically have now got a drag race set up with my boss. He has an '88 Corvette. It's an auto and he hasn't done anything with it outside of that. I'm just hoping that I'm not going to get spanked. Anyone have any ideas. I hope to have the cat gutted and a K&N equiped by race time.

LOL. Keep your mouth shut until you have turbo. Actually my car is currently NA Auto with exhaust and intake on a newer motor. I've killed 5.0 Mustangs, Camaro's, and have kept up real lose to a Vette. The Vette had about 3/4 of a car length ahead of me.

Hmm... Depends on how well he took care of that L98.
He should be sporting about 45 more hp than you, and something like 130 more lbs/ft of torque, in a lighter car....
Yeah, I see it working out well for you :p

I'd give him a run for his money, or atleast everything you have, but I would, in the end, let him win. Losing might instill some bad attitude in him about you...unless you know your boss really well. Sorta like the company golf outing...you let the execs win.

Hmm. May I ask what you have done to your N/A? Either these 5.0's, Camaro's & Vettes were complete junk or you have some serious power pushing through those 6 cylinders.
5.0's aren't fast, but they are for sure quick. Same goes with Camaro's unless they are V6's...
As for Mr. Corylee316, I'd say your chances are very slim. The Corvette's of that Generation are not the quickest...but they still back some power and lots of torque. If you had a stock TURBO Supra, you'd give him a good run, but N/A, I don't see it happening. Also, being Automatic N/A decreases your chances even more. If you were AUTO Turbo, You would be good to go!:icon_razz Otherwise, back out now and tell him you were joking about racing. ;)

A 1988 corvette only has 45 more horsepower than a NA supra. That sounds a little hard to believe. I've read other posts of yours in the past and you seem pretty smart. I would have figured an 88 corvette for about 300 horses. A NA supra for maybe 200. I'm not a corvette expert though.
I think you'll get your ass handed to you on a silver platter, but good luck all the same.......................lol

L-98 was 230hp or 245hp, I don't remember which :) NA Supra was 200.
Torque on the L98 in '88 was I believe 330lbs/ft.
Yep! Looked it up quickly - 230hp, 330 lbs/ft in the '88 L-98.
So he's giving up 30 hp and a BOATLOAD of torque to the TPI system ;)
Also, I don't give a rat's ass what anyone tells you. A stock TBI (throttle body injected) L03 305 in a Camaro or Firebird, IS NOT FAST.
The stock 3.1L V6 + 5 speed was faster than the TBI 305/automatic. High 16 second cars.
'Vette didn't see 300+ ponies again till the LT1 showed up to play... then it was the LT4, and LT5.
Have any of you SEEN an LT5 motor?

Well, im not familiar with older Corvettes, but for what its worth when my car was non-turbo 5 speed I raced my friends 98 automatic LS1 Camaro a bunch of times. I would always be a car ahead off the line, but after first gear he would just literally drive away from me, in the end he would easily have 4 or 5 car lengths on me.
After I swapped the turbo motor in, we were pretty much evenly matched, and if i got a really good launch I would end up ahead a car length or so. This was when he first got the car with around 70k miles on it, these days his transmission is dying of neglect, and he loses races to 1988 Yamaha Radians (or whatever those shitty things are called.)

:bsflag: the ls1 have 320 hp and and 345? lb ft. torque. and could run with the mkiv twin turbo supra. I had both a 4 th gen and 3rd gen supra both turbo. mk iv was stock, and my 3 gen had exhast and intake. needless to say mkiii couldnt touch my mkiv. therefore i dont think you could even hang with an ls1.

When I had the stock turbo running 12psi w/ exhaust and intake, I had at it with 1999 SS Camaro (LS1) and his front bumper was at my rear-quarter panel by 100mph or so. If you were running stock boost (6-8psi), I wouldn't doubt it that your MKIV would spank your MKIII.
MKIII's are so restricted, stock, that the littlest things will make it that much quicker. I won't call BS & I won't say anything is telling the truth/lying because EVERY car is different. As time goes, so does mileage, motor wear, tranmissions, etc.

Jspec7m88
08-25-2006, 08:16 AM
No. The way I look at it and the way it should be looked at no matter what you drive.
16 seconds: Get outta here.
15 seconds: Slow.
14 seconds: Decent.
13 seconds: Quick
12 seconds: Fast
and so on. I simply don't care what people say. I go by those numbers.
Something like a stock 98 Z28 Camaro...That's like a mid to high 14 second car...You ride in it, it's got a lot of torque so it feels quick, but runs 14's. As above says, it's "decent".
:NINJA EDIT:
Stock LS1s are *slow*, but that's just my perspective. :P
Yes, WeDgE: If you are T78 powered, anything running slower than a 10 second quarter mile will be slow to you. ;);)

You can call BS all you want, what reason do I have to fabricate such a story? I cant speak for ALL Camaros but this particular one I raced about 10 times in all, about 5 times non turbo, and 5 times after the turbo swap, with an open downpipe. The LS1 is a powerful motor, but every Camaro I have ever been in has been pretty slow, especially when they are automatics.
billspreston01
08-25-2006, 03:46 PM
a stock 5.0 and a stock turbo supra is completely dependant on drivers. stock camero's are a bit faster, but still not all that fast. The ls1 is a great motor but intake and full exhaust with 11-12 psi should even it up at least. v6 camero = mid/high 16 in the quarter. Real sports car eh?

Keep a good attitude about, and if you boss is a nice guy he might even say you hung pretty well considering its a 3 litre naturally aspirated motor.I remember being new to my supra, sure does feel fast but when you put it next to something else, you get a reality check real fast.Goodluck and besafe

Before I bought the supra frim my older brother there was a BHG that needed to get fixed. I still didnt know much about the supras at that point and my older bro decided to just replace the engine with another NA, but install new seals. We also got a newer tranny installed to. A mechanic that i knew back then did the work, and told me that he'd boost up the power a bit. I did think much of it cause i was wondering the same thing as you, HOW? When I got the car back i took it for a test drive with him. HOLY SHIT, the car is goin with 3/4 throttle in a straight line and it shifts into secon and squeels the rear tires almost throwing the rear end out. I asked how or what, and his response was dont worry about it just have fun. The car had been running mint for 3 years now, but i cant find the guy to find out what he did. I think he went back to Greece

Sorry I haven't been back. My challange to my boss was as much to get his car out of the garage as to find out what my car could do. Last year he only put a handfull of miles on his car. I tried goading him out because I know he likes to drive his car and he normally needs a reason. That and it will give me some insparation to better my own car. I don't expect to beat him but I want to give him a run for what he's got. Maybe start something in the office that I work in 'cause alot of guys talk but they won't put up. I like the idea and before next season starts hope to get 5-7 of the guys out on a regular basis. This might just be the fuel. And by then I will have mine back to where it needs to be and then some. If I can get my boss out this year yet I will definatly get the slips posted.

I've forgone the thought of racing him entirely now. He is in the process of tearing it down to install a 380 horse crate motor. I still tell him that it is a complete waste and that he should just give me the money that he is throwing away to put into a car that gets driven. I'll still post timeslips if I can get to the track before the snow flies.

Why do people try and run against V8 domestics and especially vettes with the NA Supra, no offense to NA owners but you've got a fat car with the lowest HP engine and an auto on top of that and you wanna run those cars, dude most SRT4's and even some RSX's would dust you, save up and go turbo or don't plan to race.

Never raced. He hasn't seen his car in something like 7 months. Plus his decision to get a bigger better motor has me withdrawing my thought entirely. But I am leaning more to a turbo set up or pulling the 3.4 quad cam 5VZ out of my truck and supercharging it. Then I might lose some weight on the car and come back at him in the spring. The local track is a weekend to weekend thing now b/c the possability of snow. Living in the midwest sucks for the next couple months.

The question should have been posted more as how bad am I going to get beat. The guy has put 200 miles on his car this YEAR. He talks about how he loves to drive it all the time but never gets it out. I thought that calling him out would give him a whole day with his car. Me pushing him has done nothing but I still have the intentions of getting some times posted if/when the track is open. I might even go as far as putting some money on it to get him out. I just feel bad for him b/c he has so much going on that he can't do something that he loves.
Figit090
11-24-2006, 12:24 AM
oh i see, that's nice. hopefully he'll get out and have some (safe) fun. what kinda vette is it again? 200 miles a year IS sad. :( why doesnt he drive that to work?
corylee316
11-24-2006, 12:30 AM
Safe was the whole point. He won't do anything to compramise his car in any way. It's an '87 auto. He dosen't drive it to work b/c he lives on a gravel road and it's black. If he drives through the gravel lot at work he washes it. It takes him half an hour just to get the car out from his daughters garage. Between that and his honey do list that his wife seems to always have it makes it hard for him to find any time for himself. It would be more fun for him thanit would for me(getting beat is never fun).
Figit090
11-24-2006, 12:34 AM
wow....half an hour? what the hell for? does he have it up on jacks and covered with 3 car covers?
too bad he doesnt just drive slow...you know he's probably wearing the paint out MORE when he washes it obessively. i live on a gravel driveway too... it stinks.
if you drive under 5 mph its fine though....
corylee316
11-24-2006, 12:39 AM
He has to move cats and dogs that are kenneled in the garage. And one or two other cars.
I used to live on gravel and I know how much damage that it can do if you don't go slow. I think he's more worried about the other people that fly up and down his road like it's the salt flats.
Figit090
11-24-2006, 12:56 AM
OH i see... sorry i imagine my road which is a one-lane all the way to pavement, no other cars. what kind of damage you mean, just paint right? i'm just talking from the car itself...i know another car could flip a rock and chip paint/crack windows and such...but is there something the car could do to itself?
corylee316
11-24-2006, 01:03 AM
Mostly paint chips from other cars, but you can chip your own paint just from driving. My truck has a ton of chips in the paint from my own tires. In fact eh blue paint looks white from a few steps back from the chips. Nice thing is that it keeps the rust away from the constant abuse. Think sand blasting all the time.

I just looked up the site for the local track and they are hit miss for the rest of the year. I'll have to wait till the spring or head south for a weekend. I just want a baseline for myself. I'm new to the car and have a few plans. I don't really know what to expect. My '82 Thunderbird ran high 15's with a bent distributor shaft and I think this car is faster than that. I haven't really looked for any NA 1/4 times on here.

Figit090
11-26-2006, 03:32 PM
how did you check it? back them off a crack and go at it again? i dont understand how to check it other than doing that, because static friction is much greater than kinetic and you cant just apply a torque wrench, hear it click, and assume its actually that pressure.... but yeah what did you do.
heh, once i started mine up and accidentally had my foot crammed on the gas...scared the shit out of me when it roared to life and quickly revved WAY up like it was about to explode. i was so worried something was broken and the engine was just going to eat itself that i just turned the key off...then i realised where my foot was. it was early and cold and i had just jumped in and didnt think to adjust my feet i guess.

except theres the figure that the 93 has at least 60 extra hp over the 87...as much as 160 extra depending on the model.
sooo...the 87 wouldnt run those times. the weight didnt change much either from those years.
i found one dragrace printout that had an 87 stock vette that ran a 14.8 at 92 mph...
i think a vette would win but not woop him.

11-27-2006, 08:57 AM
Yeah I backed them off then rechecked them. The tires that are on my car grip to a point and then let go. They don't even squeal. I have to be careful b/c they don't make noise either. It's just grip and then nothing.
I think by the time I can actually get him out to do anything I might be going turbo. I am still on the fence on what I want to do. It kinda depends on how the body is when I get into that this winter.

Most of the cars that I have had squealed tires. I don't know if it's the tourque curve on these cars but it bites to a point and then ice. I don't speed in residential areas since I lost my licence almost 8 years ago.

lol, i never got any bad looks with the supra even though i used to speed all the time. Well actually there was one time. I was going down the steer and schools were getting out. I was doing about 20, in a 25 mind you. A van pulls out RIGHT in front of me like the bitch didnt see me, i hit the breaks tires screech for a sec, next thing i know every parent/teacher/and bystandars are yelling at me, i shouldev just stopped there and argued, but that never does any good they think their angels compared to us.
The maxima. I drive below speed limit, i see mother grabing their children off the side walks. Pisses me off quite frankly, i never feel stupid. Neither should you, because for all you know they speed them self's i once had a woman follow me and tell me her husband is going to beat me up because i ROLLED down the hill doing no more than 20, later on the day i found out she does it her self all the time. These people are Hippocrats. As long as you are in control of you vehicle they shouldnt even look at you but ofcourse they do. Now if you were fishtailing squeeling tires and doing the absolutely most idiot shit than yeah id yell at ya too. But like i said. The guy that yelled at you probably went off to work that morning breaking an occasional law or two him self.

I hope to have the cat gutted and a K&N equiped by race time.
go to the junk yard and look for a turbo supra and pull ct26 and the turbo parts (i mean everything)+20 hp and throw an exhaust,dp,test pipe another +10hp?
maybe??:dunno:

If you were AUTO Turbo, You would be good to go!:icon_razz Otherwise, back out now and tell him you were joking about racing. ;)

couldn't agree with you more. a stock n/a mk3 beating 5.0s and camaros is hard to believe.

Expect low 17's high 16's at around 85mph in the sup.
