Who's done this? Does it give a noticeable difference?

My 7m-gte likes 12 deg, made 15whp more then at stock 10 deg.

Hm, maybe that's because it was turbo charged. I remember Bishop raising the timing on his N/A but I don't know if it was effective or not.

im running 12 base. not sure of the gains tho.

Effective/noticeable? That's all I'm wondering.

Also, I've heard of people going up to 16...

DaSuprawolf

id do it just because it *might* be better.
i wouldnt go that high! not on our cars anyway.

:biglaugh: OOPS, NA section, sorry!

It can make a difference in responsiveness and gain you a few HP. Push it too far and you'll knock like hell if you don't use high enough octane gas though. IIRC, someone was running ~25ºBTDC on a GE... I think it was on that *other* forum. Sounds crazy to me.

I run 14º and there is a difference. Not huge, but I can tell.

losses in mpg too?

DaSuprawolf
07-27-2006, 10:13 AM
no, gain.

ValgeKotkas
07-27-2006, 10:24 AM
ohoo, if you gain in mpq AND hp, then that must be good:icon_bigg

DaSuprawolf

its runs more effitiant(sp?)

Hmm.. soo now I have to search how to change this timing:icon_bigg

Edit: if I read the right things, then why do many say stay stock timing?

so....10degrees is standard, but 12 to 14 is good for both more hp/torque and miles per litre?

CRE

I can't say I noticed any difference in my mileage at all.

back in my NA days i ran 16 degrees of advance....really woke the car up. just be sure to run good gas....

So is his hard to time?

16* btdc is a lot of advance. 94 octane? in an n/a? haha

Ma70.Ent

There are a few people I've heard who run 16 degrees at around 91-93 octane, and if this even raises MPG...I'm definitely doing this one :D

eh. 4 degrees of advance over stock is not a whole lot....

no idea what my timing is right now, but I run 91 usually, 94 if I end up stopping at the right gas station :)

don't waste your $$. if you don't need higher octane, don't run it. it only makes your wallet lighter and probably is making your car slower.

So what would be the best timing then(performance-engine life...)? Stock 12? Master drjonez?:icon_bigg
I just don't know what could be good fuel here, we only have 95 and 98 (some 92 too) octane. Quality unknown, but my father thinks these octanes must be totally different from your US ones:icon_razz

best timing? i guess it depends on your goals and what fuel you will be running. ideally, you'd want to run as much advance as you can without knocking.

yup, sounds like your gas is rated only by the RON number. here in the US it is (RON+MON)/2.

ValgeKotkas

Soo what would be your RON then(no clue what it means) so I could compare:icon_bigg thx!

Edit:wikipedia helps:icon_bigg They say your AKI is about 4-5 points lower than our RON

Hmmm, then let's say i run 87-91 octane(AKI) then, what would be the best timing? (goals - healthy engine, good response/performance)

Kai

Europe measures only by the RON number - either 95 Unleaded, 98 to 101 Unleaded or 97 Leaded in some places that still allow it. Lowest i run is 98 Unleaded, 95 is for weenies in Clio's :D

Kai

Whats the stock motor octane number for the 7M's? I'm assuming its 89. I've done the math, and by your account, 98 RON fuel + 89 MON /2 = 93.5 - which is what i always fill up with.

Stock minimum in our rating is 87, as printed by Toyota.

Now, this may sound like a bit of a newbie question, but what does this too advanced knock sound like? I have never heard it before, is it something you can hear without monitoring equipment? Wouldn't the TCCS just yank the timing back if it detected it?

lts of people still call it "ping" as opposed to "knock" cause it sounds more like a ping. Ive always referred to the sound of a diesel engine as knock, and the sound of a small block chevy with flat cam lobes as a ping. What Im trying to describe is that while rod knock has that hollow deep tone, ping (or predetonation) is a much higher sound and alot like valve clatter or steroids.

If you have a good signal wire and the knock sensor is in good condition, you won't hear much. With horrible gas, the ECU will have a difficult time adjusting, but the car will run like shit anyway.

Sorry to bring a dead topic but...

Do certain modifications cause better gains out of timing? IE: Having bolt ons will give more gains from timing advance as opposed to a stock supra?

Just to revive this dead topic - when Darket (ed) from the UK Mk3 Forums did a once over on my car the other week, he found that the timing was set to 8 degrees, so no wonder it was running like a bag of crap and sucking down fuel at a rate of knots....

Since changing it to 12' though, fuel economy has improved as has driveability, and in 2nd gear now, its SCARILY noticable from 3000rpm and up...
