I just bought a Supra engine rebuild DVD from EBay, not having done the lower end before, and I am wondering if anyone here has seen it? Making a video is a good idea, but I'm concerned that this production cuts a few corners.

I dunno, but definitely keep us posted. I would definitely buy one if it was put together by the vets around here! :naughty:

Do you have a link for it? If its the same one that had been discussed a year or so ago, you have just wasted your money.

I can't speak for the depiction of the lower end rebuild, but I would not use the dvd's recommendations for the head. The guy who did it mentions nothing about checking the head surfaces, replacing the stock head bolts, helicoiling the exhaust bolt holes, checking valve clearances, etc. The thing that got me was his checking the head for flatness with a carpenter's square! :aigo:

Okay, so maybe I answered my own question. But I really liked watching somebody install rings and bearings.

For someone trying to rebuild his/her engine for the first time, such as myself, this DVD helps ALOT! It gave me a better understanding of the overall process and aid in visualization as I do my research the Tech/Tech tips/Disc. forums, without scratching my head going "what the heck are they talking about, what the heck is a bearing...?", ".... etc...

From reading many posts and disscussions and how-to's, I wouldn't be surprised of all the vets on here disagreed or suggested other approaches to some of the steps from the vid. However, I would recommend any 7M rebuilding newbies to watch the DVD, and do some research on here, at the same time. A better instructional DVD from the vets on here would be way better, of course. :naughty:

I bought and watched this DVD. Too bad he took apart a 7MGE and not a 7MGTE. It was really informative although it seemed like he didnt know what he was doing some of the time.

does he talk about using plastic gagude to check for bearing cleanence? some one allready said he didn't check valve lash,

did he show you the right way to check timming belt tension? which is, lossen the idler bearing allow the spring to tighten the belt, and tighten the bolt, then twist the long side of the belt, and the belt should not twist any more then 90degree's period.. if it does, then losen the bolt again add alittle pressure to the bearing, and re-check the belt , you must get 90* or the belt isn't loose enough,

but before i post this and forget, after you put the belt on, and check for initial tension, spind the motor 360* and then re-check the timming belt, (for each adjustment) and dont spin the motor in the wrong direction either..

did he replace the bearings?

i have the feeling, he pulled a good motor apart, cleaned every thing off camera, and put it back together...

though i haven't seen the video, i have done every thing first hand with some one more knowledged lettin me kno if i screw up..

also a reason i was happy to pay to have my brother's motor assembled to a shortblock, that way i can fall back to some one else, and not let it completly be my fault if all hell breaks loose in the motor.

im temped to put new bearings into my motor, but i will have to purchase new tools to check clearence and bore's..

He did use the plasticguage to check for clearance. Did do the timming belt tension to some extend, and direction of rotation (even marked on belt.
Not sure if he replaced with new bearings, but he DID mention something like: "when you put your new bearings on...".
He probably disected a low mileage so everything looked pretty good.

why dont u just get a TSRM and read all about how to tear down and rebuild the engine properly, also if your unsure about bearing clearances etc. talk to a machinest, i kno many people who think they know what they're doing and improperly rebuild an engine only to have it seaze up 3,000 miles later

i also know machinist's sometimes don't know as well what they are talking about and rebuild a motor to have it seize up 1000 miles later :icon_conf
