i may be retarded but i can't seem to find any information on how to actually instal the studs. is there a special tool? do you put the studs into the block first or do you instal them like bolts (after the head is on the block)?

and on another note; is there a seelant that needs to be applied to the gasket itself? i've heard people talk about "break quiet" and "copper spray".

thanks for the input guys.

you screw the stud in, put the head on and put the bolts on. i had a problem with the bolt and cam clearence so i kept a gap in between the hea and block till i got them all started then let the head down. as far as the brake quiet or copper spray, it's more or less, from what i understand, an extra safety step. also i'm assuming your using a metal hg?

It's for a Camero but should be very similar. The main thing to note is that the studs have allen key holes on the tops, so those go head side.

fel-pro gasket. decided not to go metal because i couldn't machine the block.

i now see that the studs must be in before the head can go on.

Don't worry about the spray on stuff if it's OEM type gasket. Those are coated in a graphite compound (at least I think that's what it is) and tend to seal themselves just fine. If you can scratch the gasket with your fingernail, it doesn't need a sealer.

hmm...I used an OEM gasket, sprayed with Permatex Brake Quiet, and put the studs in one by one with an allen key, while the head was sitting on the block.

Yea, i know...LOL

P.S. You will have to turn the cams slightly to get the nuts and socket to fit in...it will be snug, but it will fit...at least it did for me!

Might save you some time and frustration here ;)

DROP THE WASHERS IN BEFORE THE STUDS! OKAY! :)
(yes I'm yelling cos I just made this mistake, remember the studs only screw into the block finger tight)

You don't want to use a spray sealer on a new MHG (starting to sound like a broken record...LOL) New MHG's come pre-coated. If you're using a stock type composite HG, I've seen spray sealer used with good results....however, the TRSM does not mention using one. With either gasket, use the ARP torque spec and tighten down the head per the sequence in the TRSM.

i've got the head on but i still needed to wrap up a few things, so its not torqued yet. soon though, soon!

just don't tighten the arp's up with a hex key. If you do, you will probably have cracks in your block between the coolant passages and head bolt holes before long.
