Is it OK to reuse headbolts?
I know it'd be better to go with ARP replacement but I cant afford them now.
Since Im gonna reuse them Im gonna clean the threads on the bolt and block. And then after 60-100 miles retorque them to spec (54 LBS).
Will this work?

It should be fine. I would suggest retorquing them greater than spec, however... I know our counterparts with turbos usually retorque them to about 72 ft/lbs... I'm fixing a BHG at the moment, and I can't afford new head bolts either, but for our NA engines it isn't as big of a deal. Good luck!

yellow..., if none of the threads from your bolts are stripped off you should be able to reuse them although I would advise against it. But sometimes you have to do what you have to do. some of the threads were pulled off of mine so I wouldn't attempt to reuse them. However the bolts will give before the block will wich could possibley result into the same situation you have already. Just my opinion and there's a reason it is free.

Im gonna stick with the stock specs for torque, maybe go to 58-60. But I dont want to put to much stress on the old bolts/threads.
Im not to worried about the threads I have more bolts from other heads to Mix and match. My cousins being cheap on fixing his car so thats the best I can do for him.
Thanks for the input everyone.
Y13: Go to 75 they should be fine!
(they're actually good quality bolts and as long as they haven't been pulled down to 100 in the past they shouldn't fail)

Never been retorqued as far as I know. So 75 on OEM gasket will be ok? the block and head arent getting resurfaced just taking off all the old HG material and putting another on.

the shop that did my hg job torqued them to 55ft/lbs... my head gasket is leaking oil like made down the back of my motor and it's only been a couple weeks since the job was done... do 76ft/lbs.. I'm going to tell them to do it right this time and use ARP bolts and torque them to around 76-80

I agree with Ij ( I can't believe I said that lol) If you are going to reuse those bolts torque them down. you have nothing to lose.

You really might as well leave them out if you aren't going to torque it down. You'll just be pulling it off soon again anyways
I guess the bolts at 55 will stop the head falling off the engine while it's NOT being driven :nono: !

I finished the job early yesterday (Just under 10 hours). Went to 72lbs and drove it for about 100 miles and it held together.
Hes getting a code 25 on and off for running lean. Im thinking the O2 sensor may not be working since it has a pretty bad splice job on the wires and we dont know when it was last changed.
