The HKS gaskets are (in my opinion) the highest quality head gaskets available for the MKIII. The bead type is a basic metal head gasket, just like Cometic and others. The Stopper type is for high boost applications and buys you a bit of insurance.

You should be able to get a HKS 1.2 mm bead for about $125 btw.

Mike: If I'm understanding this correctly the Stopper is an MLS like a Cometic?

And the Bead type is a single layer with rolled beads?

What is the Grommet HKS Gasket?

The easiest way is to look at the cross section of each gasket to see how it it makes it's seal

We'll start from least expensive to most expensive, and I'll throw my $.02 on each of them.

As you can see, the bead type is exactly what it sounds like. A bead is run around each combustion chamber. It's a good gasket for most street cars, and can handle a considerable amount of boost when properly torqued.

Grommet Type:

As you can see, the grommet type gasket is actually a bead gasket with an extra "ring" around each cylinder. If you are going to spend the money on this gasket, I'd take the extra step and go right to the stopper type below.

Stopper Type:

This is the ultimate HKS gasket. As you can see by the design, it's a bead type gasket, and a grommet type gasket with the addition of the stopper being an integral part of one of the gasket layers. This is a very complex gasket to manufacture, however if you ever blow this gasket, you are REALLY doing something wrong. I've never seen one of these blow when installed with ARP studs and a properly torqued head. It's a monster of a gasket (with a monster price tag). However if you want to put the head on once, and run silly amounts of boost, this is the best gasket you can get.

Thanks Mike!

Great info as usual.

Do they do a range of thicknesses?

Thanks Mike!

Great info as usual.

Do they do a range of thicknesses?

HKS does the following for the 7M:

Bead 1.2 mm
Bead 2.0 mm
Bead 3.0 mm

Stopper 1.0 mm
Stopper 2.0 mm

As far as I know, HKS hasn't made a grommet type gasket in years. I think they felt the same way I did about them. ;)

Awesome information Mike!
Always wondered about the differences myself.... thanks.

can u reuse a mhg?

Can you reuse one? Sometimes. Depends on what kind of shape it is in.

Should you reuse one? In my opinion, no, never.

Ditto that!

there is a 2.0mm Stopper in my future ;)

Are the cometic mhg's the same design as the bead type?

Yes, same basic design.

is Cometic as good as HKS? Is there a big difference in price?

IJ.

Either will work fine it's more done to the surface prep, Cometic are usually cheaper, also ALL will fail if detonated hard enough so don't assume just because an engine has a MHG it's BHG proof ;)

I heard that.... I don't plan on going over 350hp. I read where HKS requires the block be machined...is this tru for Cometic as well?

IJ.

True for ALL MHG's.
(If the deck doesn't pass inspection for flatness/smoothness)

Yes. For a mhg the head and block need to be machined to a certian smoothness spec.

Usually around 50 ra or better for a cometic/titan and 30ra or better for hks.

The smoother the better for both tho. Should look like a mirror on the finish of the head and block.
