Mines kind of got fins on, but I think they are for strengthening the casing, not cooling

Got one on my 90 turbo.
I thought perhaps it might be some kind off damper to remove vibration from being transmitted through the transmission, in much the same way that vw put extended weights on they're gearboxes on corados and golfs. Must admit the fins bothered me though. Perhaps its acombination of the two. remove heat/dampen vibration.
