View Full Version : Emissions and Hydrocarbons WTF!?!?!

OK so i just bought an '87 turbo with 81k miles in january (2 months ago). I took it to emissions and it failed. No biggie i figured. So i replaced my cat (random technology is good right?), cleaned my air filter, added red line fuel cleaner, changed my oil and took it back. I failed again due to hydrocarbons, the exact same as before. I bought new spark plugs and i'm waiting to install them, but i happened to look at the chart they gave me and this is what i saw:

Whenever the car was idling or the guy stopped accelerating, it was running PIG RICH, but if he accelerated, Hydrocarbons went down considerably. If he BOOSTED, they were barely even there. So it has to be my fuel system, right?

I really have no clue what i need to do next, so any help would be appreciated. Ask questions if you need more info. Thanks guys!

actually you can test it with a voltmeter before you change it to see if it is working correctly, but odds are that is what your problem is. I believe I got mine from MDCMOTORSPORTS, he has replacements at a great price, ask him.

I've also heard that if you run the car hard to heat the cats up before testing it helps.

The car is dying. Give it to me.

Or you can follow the advise of diagnosing the problem instead of throwing more parts at it. It is your money.

check the spark plugs to see if they are fouled
