Crankshaft Timing Pulley Removal

Ok, so the problem here is that I can't manage to get the crankshaft timing pulley off. I went to my local Kragen and Pepboys but they dont have the right size tool to pull it off. I was wondering if anyone knew any tricks to this or if anyone knew where to purchase this tool.

You're talking about the crank pulley(harmonic balancer), right? If so the best way is to use an impact wrench. I didnt have access to one so I had to use the old starter bump method. You put a wrench on the bolt, wedge it so it cant move, and turn the starter over for like a second at a time and the bolt will usually come loose. If you use that method, be careful.

I just used a deep socket (17mm I think?) on a ratchet handle with a long piece of steel tubing over the end as a longer handle :)

No, he's not talking about the crank pulley. Exactly like it says, crankshaft timing pulley, the only better way I could see to word it is gear instead of pulley.

Does the TSRM list a tool you should use for it?

i know when i replaced my lower gear, it came right off with my hands, it just slid off?

Use a puller. They are available in lots of places, and they cost a few bucks.

I used screw driver behind each side of the pulley and wiggled it.
The pulley puller for the local auto parts place would be the best though.

I used a 2 arm gear puller from sears.
Puth the bold back in a couple of turns, put the gear puller on and pop, off it came.

Now, when you put it back on...

Get some 1000 grit or 800 grit sandpaper, and polish up the crank surface a little bit where that pulley and your harmonic balancer sit. Once you have them nice and smooth, clean them off with a rag and some paint thinner or other solvent. Let that dry and apply a small amount of antiseize onto the nose of the crank where both pulleys ride.

If you do this, next time you won't have any problem getting either off.

they make a harmonic puller, you can get it from autozone(or whatever you local store is)works wonders

You want to be very careful using a screwdriver to pry on it, as the belt guides on both the front and back of the timing gear are pressed on in only a couple of spots and is easy pop them off by prying on them. In fact I would say don't pry on them, just get the puller and do it right. There is too much of a risk of causing damage by prying on it.
