View Full Version : Race Ready 7M
My intent is to build a reliable, very durable engine, capable of racing in a 12 hour endurance race. Some of my fellow Club members think I'm nuts showing the competition what the engine has undergone. On the other hand I said that SCCA can't DQ me for not documenting what internal improvements went into this build... Here is a set of pictures of the enduro build: the engine builder is M&B Cylinder Heads, Portland Oregon.
More to come... Van

oh boy, I love a purpose-built engine !!! http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp232/tunerguy1971/popcorn.gif
Here's more... M&B also did the crank lightening and balancing. Here's a link to vids of the build: http://www.youtube.com/RaceReady7m . If you don't like them, don't look! :icon_bigg Van
And more... Ceramic coatings were done by Finish Line Coatings, Milwaukie Oregon: thermal dispersant on the outside, teflon oil shedding coating inside the block; pistons are coated on the top with thermal barrier, skirts with moly and teflon oil shed coating, underside. ATI damper, Probe pistons, Eagle rods, Ishihara -Johnson crank scraper, Spec flywheel. Van

nice build
TMS, 2 MM MLS, head gasket to keep the stock comp ratio. After decking the block .5 MM (to get below the errosion on the old deck), and giving the head a polish. Head pics will be coming out on Wednesday.
I plan to run the 7M with the same 50trim CT26, so it will likely make better than what it has been making these past four years, 314WHP and 333 WTQ, as I've had extensive head work done on the 7M, plus more ceramic thermal barrier coatings done to the combustion chambers and the valve faces. I plan to see less retard of spark during operation, while using the stock ECU. In addition, with less parasitic drag on the crank and reciprocating parts, the engine will be more effective in transferring the torque to the transmission. There I plan on running 18 weight transmission oil from NEO Synthetic and their LSD oil in the Diff (I'll monitor the temps in both). Should be interesting to see what happens at the track! :burnout:
On the cooling side the oil capacity is up to nine quarts (seven in the oil pan and two in the oil cooler), and the coolant will go through a three row, dimpled tubing, cross flow, two pass racing radiator (at stock pressure and temps), all aided by a thermostatically controlled, 16 inch electric fan.
I'll keep ya posted. Van

You said 7 quarts in the pan, did you enlarge the pan at all? Better baffling?

wow, your car is coming along great! i cant wait to see it done
Hey!
Hows by u? Ya it's been a long haul since u helped me with the rear sub-frame switch out. I've decided to go full road race. I bought two oil pan bulges through Speedway Motors online, added swinging baffles, and had the pan modded last week and is just finished, and coated at STB Coatings in Portland. Plan is to p/u today and get some pics up on the forum tonight. Van

I did enlarge the oil pan with oil pan buldges and added piano hinge as swinging baffles. I'll try to get pics of the pan up on the forum tonight. Van

Thanks!
I added pics of the Ishi-J crank scraper, during test fittings. Oops! A little too close... on that last one. Van
nice build
Thanks, it's an 86.5 Supra I've owned since 87, and the only thing I can add is it hasn't been hit, yet... It is super white w/charcoal grey leather interior. Now all that interior is going out and a roll cage in. After that, I'll likely just polish the exterior, as the original finish is in good condition. Van
Looks good, looking forward to finished pics.

Subscribed for sure ::w00t:: You're giving me new inspiration that a 7m will survive! As long as you have deep pockets. :biglaugh: Nah, nice build going on, just make sure to get an all out racing oil pump. And just for insurance, are you going to do a dry sump just in case things dont go right?

one of the vendors was offering coated oil pumps with closer tolerances, maybe thats what he is reffering to?
As planned, here are pics of the oil pan that show the pan baffles, in the last two pics... The baffles use a piano hinge, with a stop welded on the back, so it only swings toward the middle of the sump. Van

Sorry IJ, I'll get a link to that oil pump ASAP. I researched it a year ago so I gotta retrace my steps.
Later
EDIT: I apologize IJ, I could not follow up with the link, the idea that my dad gave me for an external belt driven oil pump must still be bouncing around in my head.
Again I apologize.
Here are some views of the head work done on the 7M. The cumbustion chamber is thermal barrier coated to reduce hot spots, and hopefully lessen detonation. Three views of the exhaust ports and bowls. In one view you see the builder using a very fine abrasive paste to get a polish and a uniform seat. I plan to get views of the head surface RA and the full radius, multi-angle valve seats and back cut valves with phospher-bronze valve guides. Van
Please excuse the blurred views. Here are a few more views to illustrate the work done to the head. Views of the ceramic coating and the back cut valves. A little bling! The company logo and info, that is doing the machining work. Polished the stock cam lobes. Van

Damn! Is it safe to take the valve guides down that much?
M&B Cylinder Heads cc'd the cumbustion chamber and piston to calculate the static compression ratio at 9.42:1. :aigo: That is with a stock designed cumbustion chamber, with ceramic coating on the chamber and valve faces, Probe Sportsman pistons, with ceramic coating on the top, 2mm Titan MLS gasket, .55mm off the block deck and .18mm off the head. OK there.
Checked for valve clearance from the piston: OK
Next, determine exact top dead center of the crank in the block with a dial indicator set atop #1 cylinder; But wait! the ATI damper shows TDC is out 115 degrees!? Dial says 0, the damper should read TDC. :3d_frown:
Think I need to call ATI about that damper... Van

Safe? We will see if I can get five years out of this build. Van

Hey,
It would be great to see these capable touring cars down on the track, kikin some butt! ::w00t::
I got started by signing up with Cascade Sports Car Club. I did that in case I liked racing, then the time and money I spent went toward a racing license. You can go to their web site www.cascadesportscarclub.org and check out the dates for next years events.

I'll be keeping track of this build. Good stuff.

ATI says their dampers go together one way. Checked the part numbers and it is the correct damper. Called Brian of M&B Cylinder Heads, the engine builder, discussed what ATI told me and he is calling them to double check for himself and will call me back. Brian said we may need to place our own TDC mark. Stay tuned... Van
Spoke w/John at ATI and he figures I was sent a damper w/the wrong hub. So ATI is sending the replacement hub 2nd day air from Maryland to Oregon, and appologized for the mess.
We took the damper apart and we're waiting for the correct hub. We'll see what happens next Tuesday. Van
On page two, I added pics of the Ishi-Johnson crank scraper, during test fittings. Van
Ishihara-Johnson (http://www.crank-scrapers.com/) crank scraper?

Yep! To think I tried not to do that; get your last name mixed up in the brand name. Did it anyway...:nono: Van
LOL mine has a "t" ;)
I worked with I-J to make the Teflon 7M scrapers a couple of years back and was wondering if there had been a company change!

what scca class are you running. i wasnt aware that turbo upgrades were allowed in any of the classes
I'm classed in ITE, a run what you bring, catch-all, SCCA regional class, and up here, forced induction is free. Downside, I'm running against ZO6's, Vipers, Turbo Porches, and last years points winner an S2000, that is said to make aprox 400 WHP. There is also an EVO IX that weighs around 2800 Lbs, it has a large Garrett turbo and carbon fibre hood and rear deck on it.

unless there is a power to weight cap there is no way i could compete in that class. its way to open
ATI hub arrived Monday 30th of November. The delay was ATI and Brian of M&B needing to do some problem solving over the phone, so ATI could discover the cause for this mess.:3d_frown:
Now the build resumes in ernest. I will be taking more pics. Van

Absolutely amazing
That Motor looks like a piece of art
Keep up the good work
And dont forget to show us the final product:icon_bigg
With regard to the ATI damper: the hubs we're the same weight so I just reassembled the damper w/red loc tight, and put it on the crank last week. I also dressed the long block with all the manifolds, but ran into difficulty getting the turbo oil return pipe fitted. The stock bolts on the intake were too short for the poly intake gasket (that is 1/4 inch thick), so I needed to stop and source new fastners. The baffles in the cam covers are done, used 6mm x 1.0 fine thread, button head screws and loc tight.
I've been ill the past week and now too ill to work, so I won't get a chance to restart the build and take more pics until I recover. Damn flu...:3d_frown: Van

I've never seen this beast in person, I was told who the main rivals in ITE class drive. Have you any pics? Van
As promised... more pics of the 7M enduro build. http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Yv0zu1J-rlY/Sys3e6a2O8I/AAAAAAAAADM/M6rS3-HHR7o/s800/long%20block%20and%20manifolds%20015.JPG http://picasaweb.google.com/raceready7m/RaceReady7M?feat=directlink These are of the completed long block w/manifolds. The intake manifold is on for this series of pics; it will be undergiong further modification to the interior to improve flow, so we're removing the EGR outlet in the plenum, TIG welding the opening closed, dremmeling the new material, to smooth the flow of air into the plenum. This enduro engine will be seeing track time during cold temps, so we're keeping the cold start injector. I'm hoping to install this motor in the car and take it for a tune-up after the holidaze...:icon_bigg at one of our local speed shops, six in the Metro area, 3 w/dynos. Van

Thanks. The engine builder and I can hardly wait to do a test and tune at the track in March. M&B have competitive rates, they stand behind their work and have a great rep in the community. They continue to build engines with Horsepower Freaks and PSI customers as well.
So now it's off to get a great tune, dyno session and review the results. Van

Hi Van! This is great stuff. Cutting no corners. I like it!
Question: I'm wanting to get my car tuned in a few months. I'm running the Maft-Pro. Do you know of anyone over there that is familiar with the Maft-Pro and/or who you would recommend?
Thanks and keep up the great work! :)
