Centralia or Bust! ......Delilahs build [STAGE 2.0 Beginning]

I found my self adding coolent occosionaly but didnt think much of it( or didnt want to think about it) Finally a month or two after I first noticed I ran a compression check. It came out 200,190,200,195,192,200 I was pretty happy with this. Then I ran the leak down test. Cylinder 1, 150psi and holding. 2 holding, 3 holding, 4......shit! ::bhg:: . 5 & 6 the same. Its a pretty slow leak through all 3 cylinders and I know the head was torqued to factory specs as it was a toyota crate motor, Ya big $$$ for the last owner.

First I decided to give a retorque a shot, I think out of curiosity more than hope of any fix I would feel comfortable with. I took it to 70, just to see what if would do. Ran the leak down again; 1-still holding, 2-still holding, 3-still holding, 4-now holding, 5- still leaking but slower, 6-now holding. So it sealed 2 of the three cylinders but 5 is still leaking. its slow enough It would definatly be drivable but Im just going to go ahead and get it overwith now. So I guess I have a fall project. So my rebuild begins and with it come the questions.

1. How hard is it to get the tranny off? I really dont want to pull both like the tsrm says. On my budies swap we left it on but only because we already had a good motor and tranny ready to go

2.What gaskets would you recoment? Commetic, or HKS? what about intake, exhaust, thermostat housing, cam seals ect. Toyota is pricy and ebay is dirt cheap, both are discouraging. Are any of the ebay kits worth even looking at? What about felpro? definatly cheaper and the exhaust manifold gasket we threw in my little bros car looked pretty good?

Now for the good stuff ....PICS!

Heres a few shots of my incredibly packed shop, The worst step in this project is going to be making room. The benz in the back is definatly going OUT!
Ya thats a 67 mustang in the back ( Future project) and a 65 comet caliente under the cover. Wheres waldo, can you find the R154 in this pic
My motor as it currently sits

The parts shelf
This engine once made well over 600 ponies on the dyno, with and automatic behind it!!!
Can you tell Delilah's a little crammed at the moment
Heres the downpipe I just fabed up, at the moment the flanges are only tacked on so it could be test fitted. I also still have to splice in the flex section.

Me and my bros Cars

The R-154 is beside the welder. What did I win?

I'd pull the tranny with the engine and then take it apart, but that's just me. Good luck.

Re: So it beggins......Delilahs build

I agree with Suprahero, it'll be easier to pull the tranny while the motor is still attached, although I'd lift the car up a couple inches to make sure it clears. How many cars do you have? I see atleast 4, and not 1 looks to be working (2 confirmed).

Re: So it beggins......Delilahs build

Total I think we have 2 Trucks 3 if you consider a ranger a real truck. 2 mustangs, 89 & 67, 2 supras (me and my bros). The caddy (moms car), a POS sable, The benz, a 66 merc park lane and the comet (me and my bro again) so 16 in all, ya we should start a car lot. 9 out of 12 run which is what 75%. At least its passing:icon_bigg . I was hoping I could just drop the trans and pull the motor but if both is easier I guess I go with that

Re: So it beggins......Delilahs build

You can drop the trans with the motor still in the car, but you will need about 3' of socket extensions and a somewhat stiff U-Joint socket adaptor to get to the top bolts.

Re: So it beggins......Delilahs build

Ill probably pull the trans with it, it sounds just as easy and then I can give it a look over too. So any oppinions on what gaskets to use??? Also Is it worth it to swap out the oil cooler? I'v heard of a few people who have gone to aftermarket ones or put an RX7 oil cooler on?

Re: So it beggins......Delilahs build

Finally have a little room to breath, the worst part is you would never guess how many hours of clean up went in to this. Still Looks like a mess

My downpipe fits about as close as you could ever hope for so I was pretty satified there. Tucks up tighter than my bros RT

Also got a good start on tearing the front end down

More updates to come. Next on the list are new intercooler, oil and power steering cooler mounts. Along with new IC pipes and a custom accordian hose.

Which intercooler is that? Spearco knock-off from Driftmotion or a Godspeed? Or something else?

Re: So it beggins......Delilahs build

Some un expected parts showed up at my door today
I only ordered them 3 days ago, and they already got here
I picked up a few oil coolers at the wrecking yard today. The large one is Idendical to a B&M stacked plate cooler and measures 11X11
which should barely fit with my new intercooler location.

This is the only issue with it

The ports are quite a bit smaller than the 1/2 inch lines I will be running but the cooling capacity should be more than enough.
Im debating on wether I can just live with this as it saves me $70. Or will it cause problems having ports that small???
Any input would be greatly appreciated here. Good enough or spring for the B&M ...66 8.5X11 cooler???

Re: So it beggins......Delilahs build

I finally have my intercooler in place, haven had much time to work on it and when I have it seems like everything takes twice as long as I inticipate. I just have to drill a few more holes in the top mount. Then its on the the bumper support and designing new IC pipes.

The cat stock cat is getting replaced with an RT one

I also did some modification to my Power steering Resivor bracket, It now sits about 2-2.5 inches closer to the block. This will give me more room to rout my intake.

Re: So it beggins......Delilahs build

So I finished the top mount this after noon, check it out

I also pulled my exhaust all the way off. Looks brand new, not a spot of rust on it. I dont even want to know what the prev owner dropped on a new oem exhaust.

My ARPs finally showed up as well. Only took 5 weeks to get the right ones

The PS bracket doesnt touch it so it wont interfere with setting my timing. As for having a cps go out I have 3 working spairs so Im not too worried, and why would people want to go back to a distributor???

Re: So it beggins......Delilahs build

Ya there is a lot of overspray on stuff like the bumper supports and stuff but they did an exellent job. The guy took his time and stripped everything. Ill post an update tomarow, finals week is approaching so I had a lot of homework this weekend. I managed to get my front bumper support cut up and some of my IC piping mocked up, so Im almost ready to make a trip out to my bender.

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

didnt get a chance to work on anything today, but I promised an update so heres what I got done the otherday.

BEFORE

If you've ever wondered what the inside of your bumper support looks like

Heres what it looks like now

Heres my mock up section of of IC Pipe

Im hoping I can make a trip out to my bender on thursday. Im going to have to do my IC pipe one section at a time to make sure everything fits right since Im going to be working with such limited space. Im also working on a slide in and out mount for my oil filter location kit due to the lack of room

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

It should direct a lot more air through my intercooler than before, Thanks IJ :icon_wink

I also figured out how Im going to mount my oil filter and got the mount partially built. As well as started polishing my Power Steering Reservoir. Ill post pics tomorow

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

I got quite a bit done today.
I decided to move my power steering Reservor to clean up the engine bay a bit and make my intake a little easier to build. The brackets need cleaned up a bit but I think the new location looks much better than stock.

Heres what my turbo intake looks like, I just have to weld in the ports for my pcv, and BOVs

I also pulled the ECU today and snaked the monster of a wiring harness through the firewall

This actually took the longest of everything I did today, Probably becuase I did it without removing the shift knob or boot. I got the panell and shifter out in one piece

I doubt I get to work on it tomarow but by monday, My goal is to have my calipers and rotors blasted and painted, driveline dropped, Heater, vacuume, fuel lines and the rest of the wiring disconnected, transmission fully disconnected, and the rest of my oil filter mount done

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

I got about an hour in yesterday, and managed to get a little done.
The tranny is unhooked exept for the mount which will come last. I took off the speedo, ground wires, and unhooked the sensors, as well as pulled my slave cylinder.

I also dropped the driveshaft yesterday

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

Got quite a bit done today, My Rotors and calipers got sand cleaned up primered and painted and reinstalled.

I also welded up the first section of my new IC pipe, My bender has the mock ups of the rest of the system and should be getting it back to me anyday.

I also got the front of the engine pretty much stripped. All the belts as well as the fan, PS pump and AC Compressor are unbolted and wired out of the way. The radiator is out and the motor mounts are unbolted and any other wires and hoses I hadnt got to yet are also off now.

Looks like we might have to dust off the hoist tomorrow:naughty:

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

ITS FINALLY OUT!!! I got quite a bit done again the other day

I also pulled the transmission, Looks like Ill have to re-silicon the front seal

My clutch and pressure plate look really good, doesnt look like it got any oil on it

I pulled the intake manifold, it could use a good cleaning

And the exhaust manifold

I found something strange when I pulled the turbo off. The inside of my turbo and manifold were white? At first glance I though Sh#T this thing was running lean but quickly drew the conclusion it must have been from burning coolant.

After taking the manifold off I was even more confused. The exhaust ports on both the head and the manifold were black and sooty just as I would expect, and the head gasket was only slightly blown on 3 cylinders? So on top of it looking normal on the engine side of the manifold I highly doubt it was burning enough coolant to cause this much deposit. The white look similar to calcium deposits and is hard and pretty rough and textured unlike regular exhaust carbon build up. In the manifold it starts black and transitions to white 1-2 inches down the runners.

I cant really think of any clear cause. I started thinking mabye my turbos exhaust housing is cracked and coolant was leaking into the turbine housing and getting vaporized. Nothing exactly fitss in my mind as I dont know why the deposits would start in the manifold if it were a crack in the turbo and I dont know why they wouldnt start back in the head if it was burning that much coolant??? Any ideas or experiences are greatly appreciated, Im pretty stumped

Also could someone clarify if the crank pulley nut is standard or reverse thread? I raped my breaker bar trying to crack it loose and started questioning everything I though I knew lol. And any preference on 3 in elbows? (Lipp, vs JLB)

thanks guys

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

Seen the white inside the housings a few times and it's usually something in the fuel.

The white on the outside looks like fluid leaks.

Yes the crank bolt is normal righthand thread but it's 195 ft/lbs.

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

ya I got the gasket set looks good, thanks. So the white isnt anything to worry about then? I just hadnt seen it on any of the other supras Iv worked on. As for the crank bolt I was sure it was righhand, at least I though it was thinking of the last two I did, but after it snapped my 1/2 drive breaker bar I started second guessing. Sure supprised the hell outa me when it happened:biglaugh:

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

So the build, has hit the roadbock I have been dreading. I moved 80 miles away from spokane to Pullman to go to school. So as of now the car sits in my shop with the motor on the stand awaiting this weekend. My rate of progress is going to virtually stop for a while as I will only have weekends to work on it. I did bring a crate of parts to my apartment to polish while Im here between weekends. My girlfriend thinks Im crazy and obsesed. Its probably a little of both:naughty: I might as well get something done though right?

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

Made the trip home and got a little work in this weekend. I had to work all day saturday so I stayed up till 2 in the morning getting the motor on a stand and pulling the crank pulley, lower timing cover, timeing belt, head and pan. The arms on my engine stand wouldnt reach the upper two bellhousing bolt holes. the were too close together so I made a plate that would bolt up and provide wider mounting points.

can you spot where its blown?

heres cylinders 1,2&3

heres 4,5&6

heres a shot of whats under the pan, its looks really clean

gotta love those oil squirters, pistons so clean you could eat off em!

heres a shot of what the CCs look like

Next weekend will probably be devoted to cleaning, and theres definatly plenty to do.

Re: So it begins......Delilahs build

I didnt have much time to work this weekend, I did pick up 2 9000lb 2 post lifts and an 8000 4 post!:naughty: So I guess it was time well spent. How nice would it have been to have them from the get go on this build. I cleaned the piston tops and cylinders but the head is definatly going to take some work to get clean. I did come home to find a broken harmonic balancer. My brother dropped it while I was gone so I had to track a new one down.

Im now trying to decide what motor mounts to go with. Both mine are shot so I am looking at a set of driftmotion steel cased mounts, MKIV mounts or an new oem set. I dont want to give up any of my "lexus" ride but I dont want to keep destroying mounts with the upgraded power either.

Its always nice to come home to new parts
