Since I own one of these great cars I figured I should write an article about this generation Soarer and what are same ,and whats different with the GA70/MA70/JZA70 Supra.
First off, in Japan, the 2nd gen Soarer was released in mid Jan 1986,ended in April 1991, while the 3rd Gen Supra released a week later. The 3rd Gen Supra was released in mid 1986 in the US, and I will explain later why I think it took nearly 6 months to bring the Supra MA70 to the US Market.
First lets talk about the Soarer.
It is often said that the Soarer is based on the Supra, but for both the second gen and 3rd gen Soarers, Soarer was released ahead of the Supra. So perhaps it should be said that the Supra is based on the Soarer ?
The Z20 Soarer and A70 Supra shared the same Suspension, brakes(mostly), gearboxes, and Engines (mostly). What was different, was the sheet metal/body, fixed lighweight headlights, a grille, bumpers, windscreen and glass, doors, switches, and interior.
The Z20 Soarer was also 3" or 75mm longer in the wheelbase, and the GZ20 has a width of 1695mm, while the MZ20 has a width of 1725mm. This is to comply with Japanese body size road tax regulation for a car no wider than 1700mm and an engine no bigger than 2000cc which is why the 1G engine exists in Japan.

An Array of Engines and gearboxes are Available for the Soarer and the Supra, ranging from N.A 1G series with single cam, double cam, double cam with twin turbo, and the 3000cc 7M GTE engine. That's right, the MZ20 Soarer never got the 7M GE engine, and my hunch is the Japanese Market Supra should be the same.
As for the Gearboxes, for Manual Transmission , only W57 and W58 were available at first, until the R154 only became available in 1987 for the MZ20. In 1986, all MZ20 only came with the a340e Auto because the W58 couldn't take the torque output of the 7M GTE. You could only buy a MT MZ20 Soarer in 1987 and onwards.
So why did Toyota take nearly 6 months to start selling the Supra in the US, and why no Turbo Model straightaway when Japan already had the 7M GTE in Jan 1986?
My guess is EGR. The JDM models had no EGR, so they probably had to design an EGR system for compliance for the US market. They probably did that first for the 7MGE then only worked for a EGR for the 7M GTE, hence the delay for the Turbo Model in the US market.

Ok enough trivia for now, lets see the Soarer's features in depth.
1. A 3 box coupe design with fixed headlamps.

2. The doors are framed doors, unlike the supra.

3. The Door hinges is different, it limits the maximum door opening angle, but allows easier entry by swinging the door outwards and forwards, that the door actually leaves the confines of the fender.

4. Both the Soarer and Supra has TEMS as an option, but only the MZ20 Soarer Limited is available with the TEMS air suspension and a Electromultivision Touch screen system, that performs the functions of playing music, a radio, TV, engine and TEMS information system. Only the steel springs shocks type TEMS system are the same for both Soarer and Supra.

See this video for the 3.0GT's Electromultivision

5. The instrument panel only came with a digital gauge system, and it was called a space Vision Meter. The actual display actually came from the upper side, right under the curved binnacle, and it reflected its image to a mirror facing the driver. The passenger will notice this effect , because the rpm, fuel, temp and speed readings are deeper inside, and when the signal lights are activated, the turn signal flashes float at the very top of the glass.

6. The model trim and name is displayed on the middle of both tail lights.

7. The Soarer is a 5 seater, yes space is tight at the back, but 3 lap belts are provided.this is where the longer wheelbase comes in handy.

8. Both Soarer and Supra front seats look the same.

9. The Soarer only came with 15" 5 lug wheels, unlike the Supra which had 16". The Tyre size was 215/60 R15.
On a side note, this gen Soarer and Supra also had a 5 lug pattern unlike the outgoing models which only had 4 lugs.

10. The door handles, door trims ,buttons are different than the Supra.

11. The climate control panel is different. Also the vents are different.

Themadhatter, I have not modified mine, but I did add some add ons.
1. Tinted the glass
2. Installed a DD head unit capable of mp3 bluetooth and a reverse camera, all I installed and wired myself, best of all the reverse cam installation I did without drilling a hole behind the number plate !
3. Swapped out the P.S reservoir, and removed the rack and send it for rebuild, + installed a P.S cooler by chopping off part of the power steering original loop hardlines.
4. Changed all 4 worn out 30 year old toyota TEMS shocks with brand new KYB TEMS.
The car drives rather well and the power is there when on boost, it's rather wimpy off boost, but that's normal for a 1G GTE.
5. Heater has been disconnected to avoid leaking into the cabin. It never gets cold here.
6. Towards middle of last year, got side skirts rear skirts and rear spoiler custom made and painted. The car felt plain without them.
