88 Mk3 7MGTE C.P.S. question

Hey guys,
I am doing a full workover on my car and testing all elec. circuits. When testing the C.P.S. for continuity from all 3 pickups, I noted that G2 is open even when the shaft is spun. The part is removed. I called Toyota and they just gave me the run-around... I own a detailed Toyota service manual for it and all it gives is the Ohm rating for each circuit, not if G1 and G2 both work all the time. I am under the assumption that G1 and G2 go to the C.P.U. for ignition, and NE is for cam position. Why 2 signals for ignition? :1zhelp:

NE is used to signal 30 degrees of crank rotation to the ECU. G1/G2 are used to find TDC for cylinders 1 & 6. The ECU will work fine with only one of G1 or G2, but will take slightly longer on average to start. NE is a must though, it won't run without it.

On a more modern car, the crank sensor is used like NE, and a cam sesnor serves as G1/G2. The 7M was one of the first cars to use distributorless ignition, so they did things a little differently the first time around.

You already have the correct technical explanation, but if you don't understand here is a the short hand version.

1. Engine position
2. Engine speed

Two signals.

sure, btb. with the C.P.S. removed-
1) use the harness point and a multi-meter set to the proper ohm reading, locate negative, G1, G2 and NE (4 pins).
2) connect neg. end of meter to neg. terminal and pos. end to G1, G2 than NE separately and check the resistance. it should be between 140-180 ohms.

Thanks for all the info, this is my fist ground up project so I am just being methodical.
5 months and 7 grand in now. lovin it tho. the build quality on this car is superb!
cept' for the seal leaks. lol

has anyone done a cps update with the stock ECU?
I know that there are piggyback systems or swap-outs for most of the power controlling systems.
I made a fuel cut box and picked up a greddy profec EBC and bosch BOV, lotsa new/modified parts.
