I have a 1988 Toyota Supra 7mge manual. Today the charging warning/failure light turned on while driving from nyc to philly. I was just inspecting the battery and connections and noticed a yellow and green wire which plugs into the IC regulator is frayed and some of the copper stands are broken.

Frayed yellow wire.

My volt gauge in the car is reading around 10. I’ll try to get an ammeter from autozone tomorrow, but currently don’t have one. I ran the engine at 2500 rpms with load on the system and the volts did not drop.

Is it possible the charging light is on due to the wire being messed up?

Thanks guys E185AE54-7A41-4024-A180-1DEB714BB281.jpeg

The light turns on when the alternator is not working.
So it's likely those wires or your diode bridge in the alternator is dead.

If your voltage is 10 the alternator isn't working.

Thanks Piratetip, guess I was just hoping the was a chance it was the wires causing the symptoms and not the alternator. Hoping it'll have enough life in it to get me back to nyc.

I'd start with the wires.
But an auto parts place can also bench test it.
