checking for vacuum leaks

how do i do it? where should i look? what should i hear? etc. I am just trying to make sure my car is performing as good as possible before i start putting money into performance parts.

You can try using smoke to find leaks, but really the easiest way to find a leak is to just replace all the intake manifold and plenum gaskets. They aren't particularly expensive and it's good preventive maintenance.
