I just acquired an 87 Supra Turbo with 109,000 miles. She's a little rough on looks with the usual rust in the tire well.

Since I am changing the valve cover gaskets and removing the 3rd Valve Cover, should I re torque the cylinder head bolts? Can I torque them to 70ft lbs with stock bolts?

Its not a bad idea while you have the VC's off. Loosen them one at a time and then retorque to 72ft/lbs in the proper sequence.

I did this to mine however it still blew the HG 3k miles later. When i was torquing the bolts they liked to "skip" since they're not freshly lubed and i don't think I was getting a proper torque reading.

Thanks on the input, with a little effort I think I can restore her. Hopefully some parts are still available from Toyota.

Most parts are still available from Toyota.

If you want to do it 3/4 right just go ahead and take the head off and replace the head gasket and use ARP studs.
If you want to do it the complete right way, tear down the motor and get the head and block machined and use a metal headgasket.

Read as much as you can on this site as it is full of wonderful information.
Good luck!

You need to back crack and tighten each bolt in sequence to get a true torque setting. (release the tension till you get a crack it's usually 1/8th turn)

Thanks, I will eventually do that. Since funds is kinda tight for now, I will just need her to run efficiently. Engine and Turbo rebuild is in the works. Thanks all for the input.

I did that but they still liked to "skip." (for lack of a better word)
I just guessed it was from lack of lubricant on the threads.
